I can definitely improve this one. The little slap parts are actually played on a separate bass track and they threw me off a bit:

I played this with a pick due to the note density but I think fingerpicking will work better for the parts that alternate between the E and A strings. Will try again:

  2. Well, I decided to go ahead and buy a 5-string bass, and I'm very happy with it (a lovely Dean Edge 2) although it's a bit of an adjustment especially playing the E string. Anyway, I tried out the Advanced and Masterclass songs with it on SA and I'm reasonably happy with my scores. I think I could improve on The Ocean more but I don't think 99%+ is in the cards so this is probably it for me:

    Hello, everyone!

I haven't done one of these before so I hope I'm doing this right. I thought I'd give this thing a try since I got my first serious bass guitar last week (Fender Precision).

  4. So I did my first post-testing attempts at Intermediate and Advanced bass on LAS:

    9692E07F4EB0AC467D5A31A097EEABA2CA5B1B09

This one took me into Master Mode before I was ready - oh well:

    B768070B332B9CB8369ADE31699780CCD7D249AA

And then a sad tale of woe. On my first song after Pool, my A string broke. I've had this bass with original strings for five years but only started playing it regularly in the last six months. So I got some new strings, re-strung the bass, and went to tune it only to discover that my D string tuning engine wouldn't tune up to D. When the peg got to a certain level of tension it would just "click" back again and again. I took the whole thing apart and tried different ways of getting the peg to turn but no dice. So now I'm stuck with either getting a new bass or replacing the tuning engine(s). I was thinking of getting a 5-string so I might just do that.

  5. Sorry for the slight delay getting this up. I had fun going through different water-themed songs and coming up with the final list. Big thank you to @Mikson for help testing the lead and rhythm paths. I included some bonus parts since these are so fun to play. LZ - The Ocean and QOTSA - I Sat By the Ocean are both fantastic on bass so I had to include both somehow. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy!

One caveat: the beginner lead song (Black Keys - Oceans & Streams) is a stretch for beginner level. It's really more of a 4 but it's challenging to find good beginner-level songs on lead and even more so with a theme.

Nicely done sir - I was trying to catch your previous score but just as I got the main riff down I started missing the easier parts and then I would just get frustrated. Still a great bass track and I'll come back to it at some point:

    66E15FB1E26DE6E11BC72D412632A5EB6202A4E7

I'll enter a score for this admittedly strange, highly technical song:

    EAB404846EA74DB76B3F762BE74044E6995D2126

And it was worth a try but damn Cliff Burton was a freak of nature:

    1D92662EC9935D9B1A2BD418DEFD1269311F7206

And what the hell, I'll enter my score on the Lead Beginner song played on my sad old Rock Band guitar/controller:

Good answers. 🙂 My wondering was a kind of asking, not to be taken as complaining. 😉 But I was frustrated, because the to first songs were so rather easy, and my own level so damn far from my level.

My complaining of the slides has nothing to do with the organizers. It's just annoying, like when people complain about Drop D not being recognized (that I seldom have problems with).

I think you are right, that the The Gold was 6/8, but it was not noted in 6/8, but rather 6/4, meaning the (small) lines were on the 1st, 3rd and 5th note and so on (the semiquavers/8th notes), while it should have been on 1st, 4th etc. It helped me a lot, when I began listening more. 😉 One of my strenghs is to read notes and play rhythms (based on the notes), so when it's of (visually) I get it wrong. But now it's so last week. 😛

But yes, you have a point with different strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes I print a note-version to get a visual overview...
I am a long way from playing with a pick. Never really learned it.

I think that The Reincarnation of... is more simple.  in many ways. But it could have to do with the fore mentioned strengths and weaknesses. Out of curiosity it could be nice to know what others think of a comparison of those two songs.

Hey, thanks. It is very interesting to hear about how others are excelling or struggling with different skills, as it gives me perspective. I'm used to getting the rhythm by ear rather than "reading" the rhythm visually, so I wasn't bothered by the 6/4 charting in The Gold. As for playing with a pick, I played Rock Band for many years and learned to "alt strum" on the fake instrument, so when I started up with guitar and bass on RS it came easily.

Since everyone has different perspectives, it's always good to see differing opinions on the ratings.

I found you have moved me to Advanced in Bass. I don't think I can handle it, not at this stage at least. So I wish to stay in Intermediate if you don't mind.

I have submitted Advanced song just for fun of it.

    Thanks.

Hi @kayteck. I looked back through the leaderboard sheet and I think what happened is that you scored a 99.69% on the Week 382 intermediate chart (Def Leppard - Photograph) and since it was a 5 difficulty you were automatically moved up to advanced in week 383. Oddly, I scored a 99.84% but was not moved up. But you have scored over 99.5% on the intermediate song three weeks in a row. I am close to that but will be moving up to advanced this week.

    The official rule is:

    You level up

-----   if you achieve 99%+ (bass 99.5%+) on a classes top difficulty song (3 for beg / 5 for int / 7 for adv) - unless you vote against! (your classmates and the orgas will have to let you stay (to avoid players of higher classes to rule a lower league)

-----   whenever you feel ready - just make a post (and pm any orga so you make sure its not overlooked) and you level up.

So I take this as you voting against moving up?

Sometimes I wonder if the difficulty values are compared. In this week I must insist (for the bass path), that Tom Waits is by far the easiest (max level 2). And I have a feeling, that the original might have used some higher strings, but okay anyway. My first play through:

    5F17EDACFA75E6635492AD0A2241885FF06EE640

I can get it right in a few days. The bonus beginner was also nice and only slightly more difficult than Tom... maybe 2.5.

    4856CE51D8E062A25519905F746A8C59C64D8878

And then came Sabaton. I really like Sabaton, but this has not much to do with intermediate level. It's stupid fast. If I'm going to get a good score on this, it would be pure luck, rather than the actual rhythm. Second, more often than not, Sabaton uses B standard tuning (or rather a 5 stringed bass), so all the yellow 2nd frets should be a loose B string (making it quite a lot easier to play (since I have 5 strings)).

I'll have another go with it tomorrow, but I don't have high hopes for learning it. It is by far more difficult (in my opinion) than last weeks advanced song!

You don't need to wonder, you are welcome to ask and communicate with the people doing selections, or simply offer what you think the level should be. It's unfair and unnecessary to suggest that we are not comparing levels. I personally tested every bass chart this week, and even "tested" lead and rhythm paths by watching them in RS or on YT playthroughs so I could validate the levels. When a song is requested in the SSL sheet, the requester provides their ratings and then others can test. For example, Seven Pillars of Wisdom was originally rated a 3 difficulty on bass. When I tested it, I found it to be clearly higher but not quite advanced level as I got over 99% on my sightread. I was using a pick, which is generally my preference for Sabaton tracks, and I can see why finger picking it would make it harder.

You also should consider that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses that affect their perception of difficulty. I have no issue with 16th note strumming and even 32nd note strumming but can sometimes get tripped up by fast string jumping or notes on the higher (15+) frets. Last week you complained about the Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus bass chart as if the game just wasn't recognizing your playing, but no one else seemed to have a problem with that. You also complained about The Gold rhythm being "off" but I'm certain the chart was correct, and again no one else seemed to find fault with it other than the fact that it's just a bit trickier to play a 6/8 time signature when you're used to 4/4.

Anyway, I don't have strong feelings about the Make It Rain difficulty, but I'm not sure how you can argue that Seven Pillars of Wisdom should be ranked more difficult than The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg. Maybe try a pick if you haven't already?

  12. I enjoyed all of these. Reincarnation of BB is not one of Maiden's (or Steve Harris') better tracks but it really picks up in the second half. Manchester Orchestra's A Black Mile to the Surface and The Strokes' The New Abnormal, from which these two tracks were taken, are two of the best albums to come out in the last decade IMO.

I must say, that the beginners song are harder than usual. And I think the rhythm is wrong. It looks like it's 6/4 (with 8th-notes), but sounds like 4/4 (with a lot of triplets). That does not make it any easier! And I think the other strings should have been used quite a lot more!

The Gold is actually in 6/8 time and I think the tab was in 6/4 for some reason. So it's a bit distracting but also just a tricky rhythm in general. I thought it should be difficulty 4 because of that. As for string jumping, I believe the tab is accurate to how the Manchester Orchestra bassist plays it. You can see both the drummer count in (1-2-3-4-5-6) and snippets of the bass playing in this video. Anyway, it's an amazing song from an amazing album by an amazing band so I'm glad it's in the championship 🙂

Can I share songs that are no longer dwnl? That I have dwnl?

Yes, if I understand you correctly. You can create your own ignition listing and "adopt" a song that has been abandoned or is otherwise no longer available. Or if there is a listing with a broken/dead link you can post a link to your own file hosting page. If you're talking about adding one to the SSL that is not in CF, I'm not sure what the rules are but I'll defer to those who have been doing the championship longer.

The main restriction I'm aware of is that you shouldn't be sharing any customs of songs that are official DLC.

  15. I've been cleaning up the SSL tab a bit and wanted to highlight one point: If you are adding a bass-only or guitar-only file, you need to add it to the appropriate tab, not the main "Song Selection List" but the "Only Bass Songs" or "Only Guitar Songs" tab. This way it's easier for the person selecting a song...for example, if they need a bass-only chart, they can just hop over to the "Only Bass Songs" tab and pick one from there.

If you're like me and adding songs with multiple parts but you only play one or the other, I suggest using "?" for a part that is included but not tested, and "N/A" for a part that is not included in the file. But that's just a preference, not a requirement 🙂
