  1. This week's theme is 90's deep cuts, more specifically several fantastic but lesser known tracks off some of the most celebrated albums of the 1990s. For those interested, here is a little tour through the albums in chronological order: 1991 - Ten is the debut studio album by American rock band Pearl Jam. Many of the songs on Ten were instrumental jams or reworked Mother Love Bone - former band of bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard - songs for which vocalist/front man Eddie Vedder composed new melodies and lyrics. Despite its reputation as a quintessential grunge record, Ten is often noted for displaying a stronger classic rock influence than other contemporary grunge releases. Ten was not an immediate success, but by late 1992 it had reached number two on the Billboard 200. Beyond its role in consolidating the mainstream success of grunge rock in the early 1990s, Ten is generally considered to have been instrumental in the rise and dominance of alternative rock throughout the decade. The album has since been ranked by several publications as one of the greatest albums of all time. By February 2013, it had sold 13 million copies in the US, becoming the 22nd record to do so in the Nielsen SoundScan era and has been certified 13× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). "Porch" is the eighth track on the album and one of it's lesser-known songs behind "Evenflow", "Alive", "Black", and "Jeremy", but it's a raw, emotional, hard-hitting, and unpredictable song, and the only one on the album written solely by Vedder. 1992 - Rage Against the Machine is the debut studio album by American rock band Rage Against the Machine. Rage Against the Machine was a critical success upon release with several critics noting the album's politically motivated agenda as well as Zack de la Rocha's strong vocal delivery. Rated number 24 on the Rolling Stone's list of "100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time", the album peaked at number 1 on the US Billboard Heatseekers chart and number 45 on the US Billboard 200 and has gone on to achieve triple platinum sales certification in the US. "Fistful of Steel" is the 8th track on the album and like all other songs on the album, it's success is dwarfed by that of "Killing in the Name"...but also that of more modest hits "Bombtrack", "Know Your Enemy", and "Wake Up." It's no less incendiary or kickass, with Tom Morello's wizardry and Timmy C's aggressive bass licks. Be warned - you will need 24+ frets to play this properly on lead. 1993 - Siamese Dream is the second studio album by American alternative rock band the Smashing Pumpkins. The album has received widespread acclaim by audiences and critics alike, with the album's musical influences and lyrical material standing out compared to other alternative records released during its time. The album has since been considered "one of the finest alt-rock albums of all time". Despite recording sessions fraught with difficulties and tensions, Siamese Dream debuted at number ten on the Billboard charts, and eventually was certified 4x Platinum, with the album selling over six million copies worldwide, cementing the Smashing Pumpkins as an important group in alternative rock music. "Mayonaise" is the 9th track on the album and is not exactly unknown - it's one of the most stunningly beautiful songs to be released in the decade and is hard to overlook - but is overshadowed by the three enormously successful hits "Cherub Rock", "Today", and "Disarm" that precede it. "Mayonaise" is one of two songs on the album for which guitarist James Iha has co-writing credits with Billy Corgan. The other is "Soma", which is also a beautiful track. 1995 - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? is the second studio album by English rock band Oasis. The record propelled Oasis from being a crossover indie act to a worldwide rock phenomenon, and is seen by critics as a significant record in the timeline of British indie music. Morning Glory sold a record-breaking 345,000 copies in its first week in the UK, spent 10 weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart. It was also the band's breakthrough in America, reaching number four on the US Billboard 200 and being certified 4× platinum there. Although a commercial success, the record initially received lukewarm reviews from mainstream critics; many reviewers deemed it inferior to Definitely Maybe, with the songwriting and production particular points of criticism. However, critical opinion towards the album completely reversed in the ensuing years, and it is now generally considered an important record of both the Britpop era and the 1990s in general, as well as appearing on several lists of the greatest albums in rock music. "Cast No Shadow" is the 8th track on the album and one of the lesser-known behind mega hits "Wonderwall", "Don't Look Back in Anger", "Some Might Say", and "Champagne Supernova". It's one of my favorite from the album though and has a surprisingly active bass part for an Oasis song. 1997 - OK Computer is the third studio album by English rock band Radiohead. The album depicts a world fraught with rampant consumerism, social alienation, emotional isolation and political malaise; in this capacity, OK Computer has been said to have prescient insight into the mood of 21st-century life. The band used unconventional production techniques, including natural reverberation through recording on a staircase, and no audio separation. Despite lowered sales estimates by EMI, who deemed the record uncommercial and difficult to market, OK Computer reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and debuted at number 21 on the Billboard 200, Radiohead's highest album entry on the US charts at the time, and was soon certified 5× platinum in the UK and double platinum in the US. OK Computer received critical acclaim and has been cited by listeners, critics and musicians as one of the greatest albums of all time. "Lucky" is the 11th track on the album and lags behind hits like "Paranoid Android" - a regular candidate for the best individual songs of all time - as well as "Karma Police" and "No Surprises", but in fact was the first song written and recorded by the band in 1995 (the other songs were all recorded in 1996-97). It's a gorgeous and surprisingly challenging song to play. 1999 - Californication is the seventh studio album by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Californication marked the return of John Frusciante, who had previously appeared on Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik, to replace Dave Navarro as the band's guitarist. Frusciante's return was credited with changing the band's sound altogether, producing a notable shift in style from the music recorded with Navarro. Californication is the Chili Peppers' most commercially successful studio release internationally, with over 15 million copies sold worldwide, and more than 6 million in the United States alone. As of 2002, the album had sold over 4 million copies in Europe. The record marked a significant change in style for the band: Rolling Stone's Greg Tate noted that "while all previous Chili Peppers projects have been highly spirited, Californication dares to be spiritual and epiphanic". In the 2020 edition of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list Californication placed at 286. "Easily" is the seventh track on the album and a feisty challenge for Frusciante and Flea wannabes, but is often overlooked in favor of big hits like "Around the World", "Scar Tissue", "Otherside", and "Californication". You will get a workout playing this.

  2. It's Halloween season! I hope everyone is doing well as I've known from personal experience the last couple years have been difficult. 4. Finally, I can leave that Death solo behind me. I'd rather listen to baby shark on a loop for a week than play it again. Anyway, this week looks a lot more fun. Here are my guitar sight reads: Lead: I have played this before, years ago. It's really fun. I have also played this before, but it wasn't this CLDC. I even remember trying to play this long before rocksmith was released. I'll be aiming for 100% on both guitar parts. Rhythm: GOG: Not my best playing, but my fingers still tired from last week and I'm celebrating not having to play that Death solo ever again with beer, so it's expected. I really like this one, the solos have melody and make sense, to me at least. I think it's gonna be fun leveling this up. All things considered, the championship makes me play a lot more than I would have otherwise. I haven't worked on my playing this hard in years, the competition is really motivating. So, to everyone involved in this, I'd like to say thank you.

  8. I just had to leave that first quote cause it carries so much nice emotions, love it But the reason for that is 2. That applies heavily to most of us who constantly participate and was the absolute motor for me to keep pushing and to invent the 10week leaderboard and xp level to keep players motivated and show ones progress. 10. This week's selection was a bit hard for me, I had too little time and the CDLC I wanted to use turned out to be bugged so I had to change the concept. The Iron Maiden song is a slightly easier Advanced class, but the Intermediate players can handle it. It's more difficult in a few parts, but overall quite easy by this band standards. And this is good song from new album!

  19. I see all these leaderboard posts as wrong and yes they are.. I've been at 50 points forever and won the other week and went down a point and two weeks before that, won and no change (it was the 10 week post too). I can post them if Ya'll wanna see them. But I personally don't care. Last week I asked Ya'll to bump me up a level and that didn't happen, I've been a rookie for ever LOL! Figured Ya'll would be glad to see me go up a level. These peeps who do this, do it voluntarily, and much credit is due them! I truly enjoy this Comp... It inspires me! Scores don't matter to me, I can tell if I played it well or not. But I can see those at the top rankings, it can matter. I wasn't injured years ago, and now I am. But that doesn't matter either. Music is like part of a persons soul, or at least for me it is... I just wanna play!! Think I'm starting to find myself again Thanks!!! First time playing this. .pdf

  20. Start this week! Easy Obviously not my style, but this is fun Oh yeah, I rated it 7 and now I'm having problem achieving 80%. Even so, I think this is somewhere between 7 and 8 and I think I had a lot of misses from bad recognition. Solo is beyond ability, but I think 90% is nice

  23. Of course!!! Here is a post you should already know: See 2) ... randomly selecting songs is the only only way to serve a fair competition. If the organizer goes through the list and just picks songs he/she would like for the next week he is open for being accused of at least 2 biases. Firstly he will choose genres and bands of his likings and secondly and even heavier he will even likely select files he has been playing and practicing - hell of an advantage. I am superaware that over the last years the championship is all friendly and everyone is having fun even finishing the week on 2nd or 3rd place, but 5 or 6 years ago there has been most intense battling and even the random selection of the same players suggestion has led to a lot of heat and altering of the rules (see 2.2). Selecting randomly still brings up the issue that the organizer has the advantage of having testplayed the song and knowing it in advance but i never wil let that count because the orga on the other hand has the vast disadvantage of using 3-6 hours of his RS time in the week before to set up the next week. Of course from time to time e.g. for special occasions hand-selections can be done (see X)), and like last week we have sensationale special themed hand selections!!! but for the regular weeks rng is the best way, and it´s fun cause you get to test songs you would have never touched. Rod. P.S: "Is that why sometimes a selection does not match the difficulty rating of assigned to a specific class, like this week's Auctioned Rhythm?" No and yes - the RNG is based on lead difficulty - so we end up with 4 perfect siff matches in lead. the rhy and bass are assigned by ascending diffs and if something is really missing (like bass mc often of course) there is either the fundus of 400 gone weeks to chose one or the spare arrangement arrangements or test another one from in that case bass only songs... i personally have not a big problem with the one or the other arrangement being a bit too hard from time to time as it might push players, not a fan of selecting new complete songs for individual missing arrangements for bonus arrangements are often left a bit alone snd on the other hand spare unused arrangements leave a bit of a mess with a lot of extra work if they shall not be forgotten. However the fundus of played arrangements is huge and those are already tested and rated and ready to be used to fill gaps.

  25. you really had to pick every song in different tuning see my results this week... this one is so rhythm... cannot get my head around that solo at the end though... This one is way above my abilities... Bass is completely different story... i kind of like that kind of rhythm few other class songs too... i had a little bit of an issue with recognition here here was always that note that i missed... i can't really remember playing this one

  26. Try bass: I felt this was out of sync, I was having a hard time playing... Nice, but this is not 5.5, more like 6.5 and yes advanced. Trying to play fingers, not easy!

  27. Ok, finally I can show the scores. This is not really hard for me, that's why I rated it 5 but looking at other results I could have been wrong And this, as I wrote earlier, is a pure masterclass, now it's time to fight for 80% Close to the GoG level, way too fast for me, I had trouble keeping up so this score surprised me.

  28. Thanks for doing the new week! link to Dream - My will is broken sight reads: alot of nightwish recently, good begginer song to me this felt more advanced than INT but maybe its just because its not i normally play so I find this really hard way way way beyond my level, nice song tho never really listened to Vektor almost the same as lead, equally hard for me also in the 'yeah maybe in a few years' zone, too hard for me Nice picks idk how much i will be particaping this week since the only song i like is too hard for me but i hope you guys have fun and have a good week everybody!

  29. I'm getting my scores in early this week. I'll need to practice Echoless Chamber by Vektor. I was about 3/4's through with no strikes thinking, "this isn't too bad," and then the song got chaotic and I got 3 strikes pretty quickly. As usual, most of these songs I haven't heard before. The only one I have heard previously is My Will - Dream. Being introduced to music I otherwise wouldn't have found is one reason I've enjoyed stopping in to join these weekly competitions. Thank you

  34. Vulfpeck always has some nice bass, can't stand the singing on this one tho. I still need to get round to listening to some more of these guys SA time. Thought I'd get at least one strike, guess not. Few bits I need to work on.

  38. @ Anitomer @ nlbsmglsk First of all, gentlemen - great competition! It's even good that this week didn't end sooner! Second - everything is explained in the rules, you just need to read Quote: 16. If you play LAS (Learn a Song), you percentage will be always, xx.00%(example %99.00), if you prefer SA (Score Attack), your percentage will always be xx.xx%(example 99.02%). So in the case of LAS, we enter accuracy score into the table, not the overall result/mastery (recently someone is constantly doing it, and I am changing it)
