but, my fixed post said he was a master with the three finger technique...unless you're saying The Trooper is a piece of cake, he is still in fact a master...

Boom, paralegal'd

The issue in question wasn't whether Steve Harris is a master. The issue in question was whether he plays with three fingers or two. And he uses two.

Also, my dad is a law professor and my mom was also a lawyer, so while I'm not technically trained as a lawyer, I'm pretty good at arguing technicalities.

Live vid of the duelists by Iron Maiden, hard to see but Steve is definitely using 3 fingers with ease. Defense admits that It's possible to play with 2 fingers, and may be in the studio, but live, drunken, 3 sounds just the same and is easier for a well-versed bassist.

Even the covers use 3 fingers

seeing as how this song has a triple meter feel, it would make sense that 3 fingers are used as well, it makes keeping time easier.

@@then3verend - All of the live videos I've seen (including the one you've posted) aren't clear enough to tell whether he's actually using three. It's hard to distinguish between whether the ring finger is just "along for the ride" or whether it's actually playing. And he's hitting the strings roughly every 1/12th of a second when he's playing at his fastest, so unless you have a high framerate video each strike takes about 2 frames, and given the quality of live footage and the fact that no one zooms in super close to his right hand makes it very hard to conclude anything meaningful from live video.

But every interview he's been asked about he says he plays with two fingers. Everyone who's talked with him says he plays with two fingers. People who have seen him live and payed close attention says he plays with two fingers (though with the ring moving with the middle finger but not playing anything).

Unless you can provide a video that clearly (ideally with slow motion and good quality) shows him playing either rmi, imr, or some other three finger combination, I'm inclined to go with the word of the man himself, and the weight of the evidence.

About the music, I agree that it's pretty great. Like I said, the fire trial was probably my favorite so far (and I suspect you're not too far from it)

Good call here, haha. :D Made my last post before playing today and was at the town right before the trial. Now I took the elevator down and I'm at the save point (presumably) right before the boss.

Okay I'll admit I'm wrong on Steve Harris, but I will say that I find it weird most covers use three fingers.

You haven't heard the last of this albatross (evil villain laugh)

Btw May 9 mc should be afraid, because the never will be starving.

Well, I was hoping to spend more time in E, but it seems that D is calling me back. Might try some quick runs on The Duellists and Jump in the Fire before tuning down, though.

I've tinkered a bit more with The Duellists. Changed tone volumes a bit, moved the first harmony on lead to be based around the e string, and tinkered a lot with bends (particularly ones that were marked as vibrato but really bend-release-bend-release...) and added a few slideouts where appropriate. Haven't tested this yet, but hopefully the volumes are good, and the bends aren't too hard to deal with.

And @@then3verend, the reason a lot of covers of Steve Harris use three fingers is because it's a lot easier to play the gallops with three than with two. I can play "The Trooper" fine... for about 2/3rds of the song, then my fingers start slowing down. Part of that is probably because I lead consistently with the index rather than alternating index and middle, part of that is that I haven't worked on right hand speed and endurance as much as other techniques this time around (in high school I could do pretty consistent 16ths at ~200bpm from what I remember. Could pretty much keep up with Angel of Death for a few minutes. But I couldn't really do much other than play really fast). Anyway, with three fingers the gallops become pretty trivial. And even if you're not good at three finger technique, it's not too hard to get your ring finger going ~3 times per second and hitting the same string each time, as needed for those songs.

More progress:

http://i.imgur.com/WTj2dCh.jpg

There are still a lot of places where I'm not really playing it cleanly (mostly just not playing fast enough), but the game is super forgiving when the song is as fast and note-dense as this.  I think I have a little more room for improvement without actually slowing down and working on the couple difficult spots, but not too much more.  I may break down tomorrow and really focus, but there's probably not enough time to really get it down solidly before the week is over, having kind of slacked off so far.

Difficulty-wise, I don't know that this is quite a 9.  Most of the song isn't that hard beyond just plucking speed.  That six note pattern toward the middle is really difficult (for me aat least), but with the rest of the song in mind, I'd say probably only an 8 overall, maybe even a 7.

So i was in D Standard when i played Secular Haze, so what i did, was playing Meliora on it's entirety, when i listened it for the first time in August it blew my mind, is one of the best albums of the year, with The Book of Souls from Maiden :D (I only played 9 songs of 10 from the album, but i don't know why RS counted the songs i skipped to finish)

Some improvements on guitar:

http://i.imgur.com/STFuOaU.jpg

Feel like I should have done even better on this run. Intro was quite sloppy.

http://i.imgur.com/qdeoaMh.jpg

Had a great run on the first melodic bit going. Then my grip on the pick slipped and everything became awkward. I can keep up with it now, the issue is whether I do for the whole time. Strike was from when I messed up a couple of chords during one of the sparser sections of the second solo.

I also played parts of the solo on lead. I like how the changes look and feel, and I think at this point I've got at least a good chunk of the subtleties of the solo. Any last comments on tone volumes or anything else for this version before I make it official?

If I wasn't having recognition issues on the G 15 17 19, randomly, I'd have 100%'d it in both by now :( ever so slightly pee'd off.

Haven't had much time to play today as the past 2 days I've been stuck indoors waiting for the gas engineer to fix and refix our central heating... I did however carve a werewolf into the skin of a pumpkin :)

http://i.imgur.com/ng8VMU6.jpgTried out playing the verse riffs sticking around the same position and shifting strings instead of moving far up and down the neck. Took some RR to get used to. Not sure if it's actually easier, as you then have to worry about changing handshape slightly for octaves starting on the C string, and worry about hitting the right strings.

Anyway, I'm starting to get frustrated with my lack of progress here and got the 97%. Might try it late tomorrow or on Sunday morning, but in the meantime I'm probably going to work on the rhythm part.

@@NoonyDeloony - Kind of late for this, but if you're getting misses higher up on the neck it's possible that you have an intonation problem (or Rocksmith thinks you do, which can sometimes happen even if the intonation is good). In learn a song if you pause the game there should be a little tuner in the bottom left. You can check how Rocksmith is reading the notes by playing those higher frets and seeing how many cents off they are from what they should be. Usually if you're within 20 cents or so Rocksmith will be OK for note recognition, but if you're further it can be slow to recognize a note (which can lead to misses) or will be unsure what note it's supposed to be. If the notes high on your neck are reading sharp, you can take advantage of this leeway by tuning a bit flat, and hopefully with that (and maybe some intonation tweaks) you can get all of the notes necessary within +/- 20 cents of what they should be.
