  • These last few weeks I've managed to win Intermediate and be at least somewhat competitive in advanced, I've been flirting with the idea of stepping up and it's probably time. I want to thank everyone

  • Last week I made an oopsie and tried to re-learn the mc song using The Dave Mustaine Spider Chord(tm) technique. It was a mistake, took loads of practice time away, and I still can't get back to playi

@ GeoAbraxas  Yeah, I'm not talking about personal preference - obviously millions of people like bands that the ones I mentioned that I find incredibly generic and "bad". And to be fair to Nickelback, I don't think I listened to any of their early stuff so maybe I'm missing something. But to call Incubus "bad" just rubs me the wrong way as they were/are innovators who will be remembered 20 years from now as they have and will have inspired many musicians that came after them. I'm a bit of a popular music history buff and there are many bands who were incredibly creative and influential but whose music I don't necessarily enjoy listening to (eg, The Pixies). I wouldn't insult them or talk about how terrible they are.

I spent about 10 years ( from ages ~17-27) being one hell of a metal elitist, I definitely have spent a lot of time insulting pretty good bands as fucking terrible (sorry The Beatles) and honestly I probably still will because that's just my nature. The last 10+ years has seen me mellow a lot, I still largely listen only to metal but I appreciate a lot more music and one of my favorite bands is a power pop band that I really need to get around to chart some songs for (The Posies).

I will pick up a ball you dropped there and say that I honestly think The Pixies are a terrible band. They are incredibly influential and some artists I truly respect love them but I have a visceral reaction to their music that I cannot describe nor explain and I don't see how they appeal to anyone. I can acknowledge the legacy they hold but can still be confounded by it. I think my growing up here is that I can dislike a band without insulting the people that like them directly, just indirectly by digging at something they like.

I think 311 fits this same mold for me, they're super influential, been around forever, and yet, garbage. Go figure 🤷‍♂️

Oh man, i fxxed up so hard at the end... until the solo only thos appr chords as misses. Zero misses through the solo, then at the end i wanted to tap the 8-12-15 (e) section (or is it 10-12-15 hmm, 3rd covid shot makes me slow in brain today) with 2 hands and played wrong frets the whole passage (X)... would have been a 98er i think

I hear you. I feel like I’ve been on a similar journey…I was sort of a classic rock elitist in high school (AC/DC, KISS, Zeppelin, CCR, ZZ Top) but hadn’t been exposed to a lot of other music. My college years were grunge and post grunge peak so I was obsessed with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, AiC, etc. Then I went through a period of like 10 years of musical stagnation before I started diving in to different genres and artists. Music streaming services, particularly Spotify, have allowed me to do a lot of exploration and find amazing music of all kinds.

Now in the last year and a half as I’ve committed myself as a bassist and joined the RS and CF communities I feel like my tastes are even more diverse and I have a better understanding of nuances and compositions and what makes certain artists great. For example, I was never much of an REM fan until I started learning their songs on bass and now Mike Mills is one of my bass heroes.

Like you though, I still don’t quite get the Pixies.

Yay, i think that´s a bit the story of a lot of us. ... Skipping a bit but starting the Posies on Spoty.

Here is something interesting for the ongoing discussion - i really like the Pixies 😄

@ jellisjenius You might agree on the following:
As music taste obviously is something only subjective there are (not taking the actual ability to play the instruments and sing into account) no objectively bad bands.

I have been thinking a lot about that, and i still think it´s very important to be able to call a band bad and terrible subjectively for ones own taste. If a band releases their work they thereby put it up for public judgement. As much as it is possible the songs can be found great - they can be found bad, and in case that applies to the majority of the bands songs for someone the band will subjectively be voted bad overall by that listener, and is in no way a generalization. That has nothing to do with the popularity (see @ GeoAbraxas - The Beatles), the good or bad behavior, their potential worth for the community (the 3rd / another band i find really bad is U2), their innovativeness or their influence on other bands. By that kind of being disliked noone is insulted, it´s rather the opposite - disagreements surely will lead to more clicks on the songs/vids. The point where we must be careful is to allow that opinions, for others and also for ourselves. Being - i don´t know how to call it but - "politically correct" here by arguing a band cannot be bad leads to uniformity where everything is somehow ok for everyone, if not just everything is called "great". That´s not good in questions of taste, nor is it in many parts of life. My kids are 12 and 9 now and i feel it´s a damn hard job for them to develop a sense of things that are good or bad. It might be a central Europe luxury problem, idk but from being born everything is captured on video and every little action is applauded and celebrated. When they enter school they have the self-confidence of a lion, and even the teachers are very soft those days cause there is enormous pressure from the parents forming conspiracies via whattsapp on the slightest sign of strictness. So - with that lack of fronts their praised mediocrity is the new great (see random youtube vids of influencers and the number of followers), so everything is way more easily great than i remember it was back in my youth - and what´s bad? Life will tell them a bit later? I drifted away a bit 😄, that´s just the way it is and shall be now and i am to inflexible to just accept it.
So i am heavily appealing to anyone to listen closely, dare to find bands really bad and tell it to the world.

Rod.

P.S: The Posies are so pleasant to listen to! Thx for the tip.

My take is this:

The only bad band is the one that doesn't put their heart and soul into their music!  the creation of art and music is literally reaching into the ether and pulling out something that didn't exist previously.  It is the stuff of gods!  If you play/sing/create something and it resonates with just one other soul, that is mighty.

But there is music out there I don't resonate with, that is for sure!

@ Rodman  I think we largely agree, not everything can be wonderful and criticism is good and healthy. When it comes to art though and especially music I very much feel what @ diceslinger  expressed, that I may critique but will not insult or call something "bad" that an artist has put their heart and soul into. I know that Incubus is such a band which is why I defend them despite not being a superfan. In any case, criticism can lead to debate which can also be healthy and educational. We are all here to learn and improve which is why this Championship exists 🙂

Another great week of song choices!

This is one of my favorite albums. Love most of the songs off this one.

Another one of my favorite bands. I've played this song quite a bit on my own, and it is still super challenging for me. Made a little bit of improvement this week. The rhythm of some of the parts still throws me off a little bit. Maybe it's just me.
