Rocksmith deleting itself - executable and core files

Question

Posted

Has anyone else been experiencing this?  RS has worked great for over a decade, now repeated multiple times, the executable and all asset files in the subfolders remove themselves.  Nothing in the recycle bin as if it was uninstalled.  The only items left in the folder are the DLC files, config files and dlls.  It has done this twice in the past month the exact same way.  I have RS on steam, patched to work after the RS+ launch that tried to disable it.  I always run in offline mode so that it doesn't install the latest version that tanks.

Unless you are setting your machine as a stand-alone Windows 7 legacy box, there is no real need to do so. (I have made one myself for "shtf senario", Battlefield 1942 runs like complete garbage on WIndows 10 as well as other Windows 7 games).

As of an hour ago, I have discovered that I am no longer to log into Steam from a Windows 7 machine. They have very very recently implemented a block to log into Steam Client from a Windows 7 pc.

Not once has my Beta tried to update since the update 2 years ago. When you first posted this, I thought the same thing as Phantatsy said previous, it sounds like a malicious event of some kind. Your suggestion is plausible, however I must also again agree with Phantatsy that yours is the first and only that I have heard of this happening to since (that update).

I suggest if you want to continue upon the path you are (which I personally do not have any problems with you doing) it is your own personal decision, review your appmanifest file and make sure everything is locked down to 0s. Perhaps you missed one. If you have Steam itself to not update, which will eventually present problems which It already should have by now, review that as well, perhaps it is the Steam Client that is updating and causing your problems. Again, this would only matter on a pre - Windows 10 machine. On the machine that I have done this on, I can not download new dlc that I have purchased in a while due to Steam Client being broken that way.

As I stated above, they not only removed the update ability a while ago, now you can no longer even log in unless in offline mode.

Again, I was hesitant to reply because it does sound like a malicious attack, I have again heard of no one else having this problem. It does not mean others have not, just means I haven't heard of it. IF you are certain that you have no virus or malware, an update event of some sort does sound plausible, but I am doubtful of what update it would be. You stated you always run in offline mode, so it would be implausible that it is updating being offline.

If you do figure it out, let us know for when someone else experiences the same thing.

I'm not sure what you are talking about when it comes to "the RS+ launch that tried to disable it". Everyone I know runs the most up-to-date version and doesn't have a problem.

I've also never heard of the game uninstalling itself or deleting it's own files without being instructed to do so. Sounds to me like something malicious is behind it and doesn't have to do with the game itself.

I'll own you one day. 💜 If you would like to support me by donating, I always appreciate the help.

I was referring to this update at the RS+ launch that broke things:

I am confident that it not a virus - it only effects the core content files for RS...same files getting deleted consistenly over 4 events. I have RS set to run a previous verison and to refrain from pulling down any updates, and everything works fine until it deletes the core files (maybe every 2 weeks). I think it might be trying to update but then stops before completing.

I have purchased RS 3 times: the original, then remastered for both the X360 and Steam->PC, as well as a ton of original DLC. I am a fan of "pay for what you play", but I am ironically considering seeking out a cracked version if it will behave more stable.

The previous version you're referring to isn't needed, and hasn't been needed since about 2 weeks after that update happened. Our newest cdlc enabler and rsmods has been updated to fix issues that arose from the update. And I've never seen anyone have this issue of files being deleted.

I appreciate the input very much. I did not know that there was a new cdlc enabler and dll. Once I implemented the fix post RS+ launch, I just kept playing and missed the update in the forums. I will experiment with configuring my RS with the new dll and the last updated version of RS as opposed to the prior version. Thanks again.

Actually just bought the game on sale and its deleting its own EXE and everything except the DLC folder. Someone else on the forum 3 hours ago also posted about this. Apparently they just didnt put the exe in the game downloads with the update but still continue to sell the game.

This is a very different issue from the original poster as the newly listed version of the game was packaged wrong on steam. There's an update for that version and it should be fixed

For what it is worth, I figured out the pattern:

With the Sept 22 version, offline mode and RS set to not update, after playing a session, ending, then switching to online mode to play a different game without shutting down Steam first, RS would try to semi-install, then stop itself - deleting all core files and leaving nothing but .dlls and dlcs.
