Hello everyone!

Welcome to the Soul/Funk Appreciation Society. Here you will find a place to discuss the soulful sounds of the good ol' days, from the early 60s to the very early 80s until today, in their most recent forms.

Anyone is free and welcome to join the group, whether you're a charter or not.
You can include a small icon in your profile signature if you'd like, I made one that you can find here but you're absolutely free to create your own.

Please don't expect binding rules or any kind of leadership in here. This place is meant to share thoughts, ideas, suggestions and of course music! Think of it as a community, much like the ones they had in the 60s (except we wash our hair :D)

There's some stuff in here that goes more in the direction of jazz/fusion which might not totally fit the bill but I'm not a genre nazi and I actually like that it's included here as well.

Also, thanks for taking the time to make the thread and fyi, "What Is Hip?" is a WIP on the other forum. GTLO made the custom and I reworked some parts of the bass line but he wanted to do the guitar parts as well, so that is why there's no official release yet. :)

Yes I know, you're probably talking about the Jaco Pastorius, Weather Report etc...I even included some disco like The Bee Gees or Patrice Rushen...and I'm not entirely sure that Queen belongs here either but I figured what the hell :D Good bass lines in the end...

So let's start with the sharing, shall we? :)

Here's a short selection of my favorite bass transcriptions websites, from which I took most of the tabs that I used to create my CDLCs in this list (these sites are very 60s- and 70s-oriented) :

http://www.basslessons.be/transcriptions.php : quite an impressive collection (almost 150 songs) and they tend to tab a lot of old school stuff

http://www.thebassment.info/transcriptions.html : very nice as well, covers all sorts and all generations of music

http://www.cocosbassment.com/transcriptions/ : a bit similar to the previous one in terms of songs' choice

http://nicebasslines.com/bass-transcriptions : lots of cool stuff too in here, although the site has not been updated for quite a while

http://www.redtenbachersfunkestra.com/basscharts/ : excellent songs' choice, but you'll only find notations here, no tabs

http://www.lessonsthatrock.com/resources/free-bass-tabs/ : I found this one recently, they seem to have A LOT of songs with the matching guitar tabs as well

All these sites are free, yet they seem to offer more interesting material than monetized sites like MySongBook...

What are your favorite sites?

Wahey! This is exciting stuff! Not only is being a proud member of the Funk/Soul Appreciation Society going to improve my bass playing by exposing me to the stylings of some of the most creative and electrifyingly stimulating bassists of all time (or least since man figured out how to record shit lol) but it is also going to expose me to cool 'new' music! Happy Happy!

Hey! Here is a crazy idea... How about we put one of these songs in the Bass Olympics every week!? Like we just start at the top with A Taste of Honey and we work our way through the funkadelic and soulful wonderlands we are going to encounter one week and one spine tingling song at a time. Or.... because this is a bass thing.... we start at the bottom!  B) lol

@justgimmethefunk: awesome list of links. I just know one site which isn't on your list (http://freebasspart.pv24.pagesperso-orange.fr/Bass_Players.htm; you'll probably love me for this B) ) but I also never did a thorough search to find more because I like to transcribe them myself anyway, even if it's just for practice.
That said, I'm always open for helping out with bass transcriptions should the need arise and I can find the time.
Just let me know. ;)

@majikman: Maybe a special Bassolympics besides the regular one with just one song per week? Let's discuss it with the others.

Oh yeah that one...I have it in my 'transcriptions sites' folder but it's not really the "best-looking" site (I find it very poorly structured) I never paid much attention to it...guess I'll have to take a serious look.

It might not look like much but the transcriptions are solid. I got the notation for my Wilson Pickett customs from that site and apart from a few corrections they were spot on.

So I noticed that there aren't any 'Sly & The Family Stone' CDLCs in the database (yet ;)) and while looking for good tabs I stumbled upon this on Amazon and other book stores :

I think I'll indulge myself :)

I've been planning to do "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" to get some slap practice. Easy transcription, so I should be able to do it soon. :D

Hey y'all funkateers  B)

I wanted to share some really good stuff with you, it's a 3-disc compilation of old school soul music, most of which was heavily sampled by hip-hop artists in the 90s and 00s so it's a kind of 'go-back-to-the-roots' thing. It's called 'Shaolin Soul' episodes 1, 2 and 3. You will find incredible things from the likes of Al Green, Syl Johnson, Ann Peebles, Teddy Pendergrass, The Jackson 5 etc... nothing but quality here. Here are just a few exemples from episode 2 :

(This one is on my to-do list ;))

Enjoy your week-end :)

If you're interested in finding ever more funk/r&b/soul music, you can take a look here: http://www.funkmysoul.gr/

Not sure about the legal side of things, especially because many of those albums are out of print and not available otherwise but even without downloading anything from the site, it's still great to find all kinds of obscure stuff.

How about this one?

On my to-do-list. ;)

I would say Jazz Fusion like Weather Report, Return To Forever, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius etc. is fine but more traditional jazz does not quite fit in, I think. Afrobeat on the other hand should be included because it's related to Funk/R&B.

Yeah, maybe a general Jazz Appreciation Society would be a good idea. I have some customs that would fit right in. Where to put musical and soundtrack stuff though? :)
