  1. Just wanted to give you a head's up... Rocksmith is on sale right now (Nov. 27). $17.99 instead of $29.99
  2. You can already do that. If you click on the gear icon beside the search box on the top of every page you can access all of the advanced search options. So if you enter "metal, blues, christmas" in the "Find Tags" box, and then select "Submitted CDLC" in the "Find in forum" section you can search all of the submitted CDLC for those tags.
  3. What version of Mono did you install? Version 3.4.0 works, but most of the newer version (I think 3.10.0 is the current one) just hang.
  4. The dlc is compatible, however there is a bug of sorts with Steam. As part of Steam's way of protecting users from making incorrect purchases, you cannot buy DLC for a game you don't own. Both Steam and Ubisoft have acknowledged the problem and claim to be trying to resolve it, but it's been this way since RS2014 came out so who knows if it will ever get fixed. Most users wait for the big Steam sales to buy the original RS at a discount. They'll likely be having one for Black Friday/Cyber Monday but I don't know if RS will be included.
  5. Black Keys's songs have lots of barre chords in them and fit the criteria you're looking for. However, if you really want to practice barre chords I would suggest you play some stuff outside of the game. Rocksmith doesn't do a very good job at recognizing when barre chords are being played. You can leave off the high notes (which is the whole point of a barre chord) and RS will still count it as a correct note. So you get a sort of false-positive result. You may not be fretting the barre chord correctly, and the high notes may be muted or not be ringing clearly, but RS will still say you hit the note. Barre chords are a lot easier to understand once you learn the basic shapes and how to move them around the fretboard. I've linked some documents at the bottom of this post that might help you out. One is a diagram of various different barre chords, and the other is a sort of lesson from Gibson that shows some basic barre chords forms that can be played in any key and also has a practice lesson that mixes barre and open chords together. https://www.dropbox.com/s/zsflwkjdya1bklo/Barre%20Chords2.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/f4jtosun339izq7/BarreChords.pdf?dl=0
  6. If you're running Mavericks, you need Mono version 3.4.0 for it to work. If you're running Yosemite there seems to be some issues with either Mono or possibly the Toolkit itself. I'm hoping there will be an update for Mono soon that will fix it. For now, there is a Wineskin version posted somewhere here on the forum that sort of works. It will convert files at least, but is a bit buggy and slow.
  7. That's Step 10 from my instructions above.
  8. Me too. I got my first guitar on my 16th birthday and gave up about 3 months later. I couldn't afford lessons and trying to learn on my own was just too overwhelming at the time. There was no YouTube and the internet wasn't the internet we know today. If you're ever looking for some good YouTube lessons, I like these two channels: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJgRMHrtQpnhKHdsGiFQRyQ https://www.youtube.com/user/JustinSandercoeSongs/videos Justin Sandercoe (the second link) is a bit goofy sometimes, but he does a good job making songs accessible to all levels of difficulty.
  9. That's the best thing about Session Mode. You can never suck. It's a great place to just jam along by yourself, or with the "bands" you can set up. I personally don't play with any of the band instruments. I prefer to just use the metronome and play by myself. The most important thing to realize with Session Mode (which isn't laid out in any in-game instructions) is that you can't use it to play songs. If you try and play riffs or chords from songs, it will sound horrible because the band doesn't know what you're trying to play. They play their pre-defined parts but can't respond accurately to song structure. I also wanted to add, in addition to the other great advice posted above, it's (to me anyway) important to supplement playing RS with practicing outside of the game on your own. The game can become a crutch in a lot of ways, making you dependant on coloured strings, having the notes always showing on the screen instead of memorizing the progressions, and by hiding the sound of your own playing underneath the music in the game.
  10. No, you can't learn "all" you need to know about playing guitar from RS. But it provides a good foundation. And it will teach you how to play songs. Once you get comfortable playing you should supplement RS with other methods of learning (Youtube videos, etc) and learning how to play in your own style (or a style you'd like to emulate). That's the part that RS can't really teach you. As for the pentatonic scale, you should definitely practice that in session mode (or outside of RS). In Session Mode when you set the scale to Pentatonic it will show you all of the notes within that scale (or any scale you choose) on the fretboard at the bottom of the screen. Then you're free to jam or play whatever you like. When you're just beginning, you should play the scale notes repeatedly until you can memorize the pattern. I play Session mode with the different scales for 5 minutes or so every time I play RS just to warm up and stretch out my fingers. The different scales are the foundations for most musical genres and are key to learning good fills and solos.
  11. I wipe them down before and after I play with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. I wipe down the neck and body as well. Then once or twice a week, depending on how dirty the strings have gotten, I use either Gibson String cleaner on a cloth or the Ernie Ball string cleaning wipes. They're both basically just diluted rubbing alcohol mixed with some oils that also help condition the fretboard (though not that much). Then when I change the strings, I use Gibson fretboard conditioner to oil the fretboard and Gibson guitar polish to polish the entire body and neck. That keeps the neck playing smooth and fast, and keeps my guitars looking like they're still brand new. I don't really have a preference for any specific product, and there are tons of different brands/formulas of string cleaner, fretboard conditioner, and polish available. I just use the Gibson stuff because it came in a three pack and the Ernie Ball wipes are super cheap and one wipe can do at least 3 guitars. The Gibson polish also smells nicer than some of the other brands and doesn't require a large amount of buffing to get a great shine.
  12. You can use apps and services like Shazam to hum the melody and see if it can identify the song for you. The description of the album cover you gave doesn't really fit with the two RS1 songs that don't get imported (A Cream song and an Eric Clapton song). Or it could have been one of the bonus songs from RS1 (most of which were bands that Ubisoft employees were in), and as Firekorn said, won't be available by any legal means. The import tool should have imported all of the other RS1 on-disc songs though.
  13. Not sure if it's true, but it's rumoured to be a timed exclusive to try and tempt users to switch over to the next-gem consoles. Hopefully after some unknown period of time they'll be made available for PC/PS3/Xbox...
  14. If you use the same Steam account that the DLC was purchased from you can use DLC on multiple computers. But not with different accounts. If you used the same Steam account you wouldn't have needed to buy RS twice either.
  15. Don't put too much emphasis on the string gauge you're using. 10-46's are fine, so are 9's, and so are 11's. String gauge is more a matter of personal preference, and doesn't really impact bends that much. Sure, lighter gauge strings are easier to bend lower down on the neck (around the 2nd and 3rd frets) but higher on the neck it doesn't make much difference. What's more important is how well your guitar is set up. Make sure the intonation is proper, and that your action is set properly. After that, you just have to deal with the fact that bends are very finicky in RS. The game is very particular about how you do bends. Just do the practice track for the Bends 101 and 201 lessons until you can nail them 100%. You have to be very careful to bend the exact right amount that RS wants you to. You can't bend too far, or too shallow. And you have to let the initial note ring ever so slightly before you bend. What I mean is, don't just pluck the note and bend all at the same time. Pluck the note, and then start to bend after the note has sounded. RS needs to detect the initial note AND THEN the bend.
  16. If you clean your strings regularly you don't have to change them that often, as long as you buy good quality strings (I prefer NYXL's). It's usually recommended that you clean your strings every time you use your guitar depending on how often you play, but you should at least try and clean them once a week. They'll sound better and last longer too.
  17. Yeah, that's the one. Sorry, I couldn't remember the name of it before, and I wasn't at home to check.
  18. It is possible. I can't remember the name of the file, but it's in the main RS folder. I extracted the GP files for all of the songs a while ago... Here you go: https://www.dropbox.com/s/w4sqn0gjlkvywp2/Versus%20Them%20-%20Impossible%20Dreams.gp5?dl=0
  19. Is there not a loop-hole for making cDLC for RS2014 for songs that are not released as official FOR RS2014? i.e. The ones that were not re-liscensed for RS2014 have never officially been released as DLC for RS2014, therefore they do not exist as DLC for RS2014, and since RS2014 and RS1 are not compatible formats couldn't those songs be cDLC for RS2014? That question has already been asked and answered: http://customsforge.com/topic/12893-legal-issue-about-sunshine-of-your-love/ In short, the answer is no.
  20. I have sheet music for Turn Up The Radio that says it was recorded in Eb. A lot of the tabs online have it in E Standard though, likely because most people either can't hear the difference, or use pedals/amp settings to give it the darker sound that Eb tuning provides.
  21. It's almost the exact same cable. The only difference is that the original line of RS1 cables don't support USB 3.0.
  22. Open up the Toolkit, and click on the "Packer/Unpacker" tab. Under the "App ID Updater" section, choose your cDLC and re-apply the Cherub Rock AppID.
  23. I posted all of the necessary steps in this thread: http://customsforge.com/topic/10547-how-to-add-custom-songs-on-mac/
  24. If it's the guitar that felt right in your hands and you like the sound of it, you can never go wrong. As for personal opinion, I prefer the Melody Maker. Same LP style, but much lighter and has 2 P90's. But that's also because I already have a Gibson LP Standard so when I bought it I wasn't looking for another guitar with humbuckers. I also owned a 2014 SGJ (same '61 Zebra humbuckers as the LPJ) and sold it because a) I didn't like the neck, and b ) found the pups didn't have high enough output for my tastes. But everything is subjective. So if you like it, then it's the right guitar for you. (I just realized the b ) makes a smiley face with glasses when you don't put the space in between. Stupid emoticons)
