@ diceslinger - reading your thoughts a tad....
SIDE CHALLENGE - Let´s COVER some [26]
Rules? No rules! We pick a song and everybody is invited to share his version. Songs shall be called every week, if you don´t manage to nail your version within the week - entrances are ALWAYS welcome. No winners, no losers, just fun and personal progress, a bit bringing in the harvest of the hard work we all do here every week by converting to own produced music, and (for me very important) learning (easy versions) of songs to be able to play them anytime when a guitar is in the room - and that shall be a part of thinking on the next song selection maybe.
So - as we had NIN - Hand That Feeds last week JUST GREAT, yay!!!! Everyone who has not finished his cover - just post whenever ready in the running week (yes, this one) so we all will recognise it.
Covering Allstar @ diceslinger is back and translating his posts:
This week we want you to cover ANY RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS SONG
Feel free to choose your most fav one or just go for Can´t Stop if you trained that already last week. There are great CDLCs for almost all of their songs.
Cannot wait to have those coming in.
Great week everyone!!!!

@ diceslinger - ah ... how we are doing it? Rules - No rules! Just as we did back in the days - A song is called. Timeframe: The running week, but if time runs out just post whenever you are ready in the next week(s) then - please always use the newest weeks topic cause your cover will be overlooked else!
From pure acoustic to playing along with the original song or a part of it to full studio band production - all is great..... Backgroundtrack, Drums, Flutes, Ocarinas, Harps, Kazoo. Yes, absolutely. Vocals - just great if there are any!
I know you are experienced with DAW recording, i still record hardware only with my Zoom R24, very happy with that. When the time is right i might be learning to use my Trio+ Pedal again also.
Can´t wait to hear also your covers again.
As i am outa town my RHCP scores are final - feel free to kick me, @ cacahuate51 and @ Mikson are beasts - beware!

Wow Rod...what have you got going on here? I just got your message and here I see people posting covers! You will have to catch me up on how you are doing it, I'm game to jump in!
I may have to do a playthrough of "Can't Stop", that one has a special place for me now. My son and his friends did a jazz performance of that song for a couple of jazz festivals. I tell you, nothing like a bunch of teenagers playing music in the basement. The irony of them belting out "Stacy's Mom" was too good!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA - Man.... OH YES! i really hoped you´ll get my msg.
I knew you were game to kick it.
I stumbled over our old covers and as i decided i wanted to learn a song to be able to play from my head - one and one makes three.Yeah - people have always been and are just awesome here - did you have time to listen to that cool covers of the last 3 weeks already?
We kicked it off with Totos Africa
Then one of the 60s godmasters - And I Love Her
Followed by maybe one of the top 3 campfire classics ever - House of the Rising Sun
And now mighty mighty Reznor with Hand That Feeds... maybe a good warmup for you as it has basically only one riff and like 2 parts overall
Ah.... and YOU, sire decide what we all do next week - please let us know until weekstart
Also so waiting for your scores - you see heavy competition all around!!
Fun times.

Bad news good - good news scenario for me this week. The bad news is I don't think I'll have any time to try to improve these scores on Friday night. But that's more than cancelled out by the good news ... because I'm going to see the Dream Theater Anniversary show on Friday ...at a regional venue just a few miles from my house
Very cool!!!!! Enjoy and tell us how it was!
Gonna see em guys within the normal festival rate in june

I'm also looking at a new guitar any ideas?
24 Frets, SSH If possible, Trem/Hard Tail.
I was looking at a AZ2402 as that seems to cover everything and sell my current guitar.
Extremely cool guitar!!!!! Can´t go wrong.
I have 2 Ibanezs and - pleasure to play.
I´d suggest also have a flick through the repertoire of the for me best modern guitar company of them all
Schecter - i have 4 of those from ultracheap to Syn Gates Signature and they all play perfectly. Example
https://www.thomann.de/at/schecter_sunset_extreme_grey_ghost.htmYou don´t have to spend 2k to get a perfect guitar

@ Vodka I know you didn’t just take 1st with a 100% on both lead and rhythm last week and still think you are too bad to record
Hope you find the time, don’t gotta post it until you like it enough to share but I think it’s nice to save recordings
No way I can do like Rodman in one go, I am editing out as much mud as I can manage
Also one week is wild I wish we had at least two weeks!!
15 hours ago, cacahuate51 said:@ Vodka Damn grats on the score!! Song is pretty tricky so respect.
As others mentioned, no one will be as harsh as yourself. I think its pretty normal to have this feeling and it is usually refered as "impostor syndrome". Infact I think the new robbie williams movie kinda does a good job of diving into those aspects. Unfortunatley not many people watched it, but it is kind of a hard movie to sell with it might not being the music people like, the darker aspects, or/and the fact that the main character is a cgi monkey
Anyways, you probably aren't that way to your friends (well...maybe to the closest ones to mess around) so you shouldn't be to yourself. Never down yourself comparing to others cause you don't know how much practice or help theyve had through out time "learning the craft". They should only be used as motivation or inspiration.
There is no shortcut to music and there's no right or wrong (what you love others may detest and vice a versa) as its an "art" so its purely subjective. So there is no reason to not try today and have fun making abominations!! Unless you don't want to (which is valid). Perhaps what you consider a flaw is what makes your cover stand out more and what makes other people like it more. Just do your best (listen, practice, record, edit , etc) for this week, upload it, and learn what you could do better and try to incorporate it in the next cover and repeat. There is always something to learn
I think the covers is a great idea if we keep doing it till the end of the year (I say "we" yet I havent done one yet hehe). then you can go back at the end of the year and hopefully see some progress. If not, well atleast you gave your best on each cover, and will have an album for deaf peopleAtleast thats the way i see it. So I will submit mine sometime this week and hope to see everyones aswell !
I agree with @ drand that a week might be too little to do a cover especially if its a song that isnt being played in the championship week. 2 weeks imo would also be ideal just cause sometimes weeks can get pretty cluttered with work or other events. But we'll see.25 minutes ago, Vodka said:You're absolutely right @ cacahuate51 @ drand . That's a magic. Magic of music, magic of guitar, magic of RS & CS. We're "working" together here. Trying to be as good as others and even better. And if someone is better than you, you try to rise as high as the first one. So than someone is gets high his/her pull the others of us.
Well in the end of "not-doing-the-cover-time" I must sat "Thank you" everyone for advices and continuous support. For the fun time we spend together.
Well... i have the advantage that i did start this 3 years ago here for a few weeks already. I wonder but how to do it again was just there.
What i do - listen to the song a few times to get the feel what is going on and what is it that makes the song unique. If there is i go for the CDLC then (rhythm might be the important part!!!) or i check the tab at ultimate guitar or songsterr. I don´t go for complicated - i wanna have fun, not fight with songparts undoable for me - so if there is too much stuff going on i check for the chords only or i strip everything down to simple, still signature. I think this part is really really important cause after that i know what i wanna do and have a structure of the parts that shall be in the cover. For the NIN song in comparison to the ones we had the last weeks it´s by far the easiest - one riff only throughout the whole song, and a very easy chorus/bridge (bass)part, effectively you can just play that riff, sing along and have a whole cover. For recording then it´s really easier to develop a system to be able to record more tracks while listening to the ones recorded already (Audacity is a good free way, to record in tracks you do need headphones). Starting with a Drumtrack or metronometrack or the original song and play over that is a good idea. That way you can also do the different parts one after another if you like.... if in anyway possible i just try to do whole playthroughs of the different tracks cause it´s much quicker and it does not have to be perfect... argh... sorry didn´t wanna go technical but drifted a bit.
@ Vodka what i can guarantee - if you just do a basic coverversion, even only a part it gets better quickly and from song to song plus you get to know how songs are written.
Absolutely love how we all work together and push each other here.2 weeks was what killed covering back then
. When you have 2 week the pressure is gone and you just don´t start. Maybe not on the first ones but soon. But hey - if one week is short, and yeah - that is damn short besides competing in ones classes and RL - we said "no rules" - so as long as you are working on your cover version - do not start a new one - upload and share whenever ready.
Rock!
Rod.

I think we are our own worst critics... When I listened to my cover all I could listen was the bad timing, the sound not very clean, the buzz of the strings.
And that's why I shared it
If I look back to what I improved playing Rocksmith, I know I can only get better. I know little to nothing on pedals, effects, recording but looking forward to improve
Soooo +1, absolutely.
I hate to hear me sing and it absolutely feels i just cannot play guitar.
That´s why i was forced and forced to bring the cover challenge back. You know what - i had a weak moment, and as i was pretty ok with that weeks cover - mainly cause it came out that way with only a few hours of time - i.... gave my kids a listen.
At the mid-end ... they said - "is that you!?", "Pretty bad, eh?" i replied. Both shook head and had the urge to add "No!" Strange things happen. Love em guys. Made my day.For me still - far from the point i think i shall give any of this a listen to anyone (except you lovely ppl of course working on the same ship)... worst critics we shall be.

Can't play NIN I think and I'm avoiding the mmmmBop so I added some lead and vocals to last week's mix lol this feels like showing off macaroni art y'all but I gave it my best and learned a couple things
That is so outstanding!!!! The crazy thing is is did a very long response yd home sitting in the bus back from playing tennis - blame it on the freakin cellphonefirefox, blame it on the 2 large beers in my head not really having eaten all day.... but that one and all the responses to the cool stuff later on that page... gone hahahaha.
Here i go again just shorter - what´s absolutely your gift is creating ambience. You immediately put me in another place when your music starts - very special. Great vocals there, cool and heavy lead/solo - sure you could have stepped back a bit and let the vocals out of the cage - but the way you did it is dramatic. Love it. Thank you!!!!!!!!-
