  1. Let´s .... make sure it´s  even less complicated next time

... those guys will help with that, also the 2mm precision drills for sidedots
    42285418zc.jpg

... and let´s do what i do best and like most  - fix some

    42285423ve.jpg

    one hole down

hmmmmm.... stilll .... what am i going to do with that connection line there... it will be covered or taken attention off by the tuners of course... but .. i dunno... we will see

    42285427ee.jpg

almost at least shows the test

    42285430cl.jpg

    that is good

    42285433sh.jpg

    42285605ba.jpg

    42285606xz.jpg

after a lil sanding to make it a tad smaller it will be a great headstock i think

    The Quest goes on!

Dedicated fret end file .. i love ultra smooth fret ends with no chance to hurt yourself and no chance for the string to stick beneath

    42272851fg.jpg

... some sanding and some fret rubbers to finish the finish there

    42272852be.jpg

that is absolutely what i am talking about

    42272853mu.jpg

    cannot wait to play those

    42272854ir.jpg

... ans one wants to know where the fretboard s/he is playing

    42272855rb.jpg

really was unsure if those plastic dots are really what i want to use... did a test and they look ok... just the way we all are used to.. slight problem - i must have broken my 2.0mm drillbit, hatd a 2.2mm - and decided to use it and fill the minigap - if any with sawdust and superglue

    .... drilling

    42272856fp.jpg

.... went well and here we go with inserting the first ones

    42272857vt.jpg

    quite straightforward

    42272858hc.jpg

well.... i always need to know quickly where is my 5th and 15th fret... i hate quickly landing on 7th when i wanted 5th ... that´s rare ... but it did happen... so no not in my masterbuild - here 15 and 17 are white

    42272859th.jpg

    42272860dq.jpg

    sharp blade and sandpaper

    42272861hx.jpg

useing the so produced sawdust with superglue to liff it all

    42272862dg.jpg

    42272863gy.jpg

    sanding again

    42272864ei.jpg

and on to another point of no return 😉

    42272865yb.jpg

as the sidedots where a bit hard to drill with no guideholes ... i used my knowledge from there to not make the same thing again but create guideholes with that sharp drillbit

    42272866em.jpg

then go all the way with a small 3mm

    42272867gz.jpg

and finish from both sides with the 10mm... unluckywise it was too old and just not good enough - see the tearout! Ugh...  Yes... of course that will be covered by the washer... but still having done something with great caution, even drilling in reverse before starting the real hole and resulting in a subpar manner... that´s unsatisfying... so....

    42272868jt.jpg

... on to the fix with sawdust and superglue

    42272869zz.jpg

    42272870ae.jpg

    yes, quite a good fix

    42272871op.jpg

on to sanding the body by hand a bit

    42272872ik.jpg

Just had to try my machineheads there... i am planning to use those wonderful D´addario locking tuners with string-auto-cut

HAH... as i left the head 15mm wide thats just just just slim enough to make it fixable

    42272873gx.jpg

Argh.. will have to file that hole a bit to have the tuners sit flat there... it might look like i coudn´t even drill a straight hole ... maybe yes, but that is caused by the fact that i added (or left) the upper side a lil bit curved for extra fancynesswhich led to that 1mm offset on the back... quite an easy fix that will not be seen later on ....

    42272874ks.jpg

I am happy about that progress there.

Very nice. It all worked out in the end. I admire your patience to back track and do it right. I've always used super glue to stabilize the frets, and have always been tempted by wood glue. Did you give it enough time to cure? Titebond gets really hard when dry. I've heard of people using epoxi resin too...  The important thing is that that fretboard is looking really great. Love the grain on the wood. Well done!!!

Thx! Had i given it enough time to cure? No and yes... No when i decided to refret, that was right after 1 or two hours... But yes when i removed the frets again - that was over 24 hours later and it still did feel a bit moveable on certain points.
Assuming and fingers crossed that superglue will give in to heat in many years when there is the need to refret for me superglue is the way to go there. Of course epoxy will work fine, but with the curing time it must be clamped down and i don´t think there is a real benefit over superglue. I am happy with the result 😄 and have run in my next issue 🤣

  4. It was tuesday - so hammering...

starting on the 12th fret... that one was extremely problematic cause i had fixed the one end already... but managed to get it loose without damage....
    42242260kd.jpg

fixed a few with superglue and hammer and just to make sure... i clamped them down while fixing from the other side

    42242264or.jpg

that went very smooth and the frets instantly built a unionlike state with the board

    42242270sa.jpg

the last hammer to go down

    42242273na.jpg

i was afraid that the removal would have destroyed the frets, but all seems like perfectly in place...

    42242280ga.jpg

looks good to me... let´s have a few closer looks

    42242285gl.jpg

    oh yes!

    42242286rv.jpg

    42242287bu.jpg

clamping also the other side while haveing to fetch my boy from school

    42242289iy.jpg

    back and... fileways

    42242292hg.jpg

that old file is perfect for the job, i shall keep that in mind

    42242293hq.jpg

    42242294sg.jpg

let me dare some.... dead straight, yeah... of course i shall use a fretrocker of some sort for details, but it is not getting any better

    42242295sn.jpg

    also on the frontside

    42242296no.jpg

    42242297ji.jpg

finishing that filing till i am leveled with the board and then like 60 degree angle

    42242298oc.jpg

    42242301tq.jpg

    fine.

I've never heard of Powerwolf but I am now a new fan and have been listening to them nonstop on my playlist! Thanks for another great week of competition!!

Yeah, man! That´s so great about the CS - love bands now that i would have never even touched like: Muse, Rob Zombie, Powerwolf, A7X, Truckfighters, Wolfmother just to name a hand full (you should play all of those btw 😉 )

    @ Rodman

    Thanks for the extensive explanation!

Sounds a bit complicated, I think the RNG in my head is much easier 😄

But okay, I understand what's going on and maybe I'll try it next time. However, you will admit that the selection list is still a bit dirty, although I tried to improve it recently (yes, I added links for all songs that did not have them, or the link did not work because was created before Ignition - about 90% of the list in total). There are also many CDLCs that are poorly suited to championship through mistakes or a weak/boring chart. I tested a lot (maybe half) of the songs on the list, so it's quite easy for me to make selection for the championship from my head 😉

I know what you did and what you do! And it is a lot lot of work and it is great. If songs are unavailable in Ignition or the file is very bad delete the line - selecting unavailable or bad files is a pain. RNGing takes seconds and is really thrilling, you might enjoy that and it might lead to unexpected weeks and even more testing 😉

PS. It's good to know that once real battles for victory took place here!

Oh... man - you might wanna go read some around week 60 and on... ugly scenes 😄 @theneverend f.e. was quite a piece of candy who could not take defeats so well... fun times then but quite some heat that drove players away also. I love the CS like it is a lot also. Esp. on the adv classes i cannot say there is too few competition.

Rodman do you select songs for the championship week as a result of some draw / algorithm? Is that why sometimes a selection does not match the difficulty rating of assigned to a specific class, like this week's Auctioned Rhythm?

    ...

    Of course!!!

Here is a post you should already know:

    HOW TO DO SONGSELECTION:

Best way is to use RNG (Random Number Generator) to select songs independently.

Note that you will have to

    1) sort the SSL for Lead diff first (please please do that by marking ALL FILLED COLUMNS or you mess up the sheet!)

    2) Do RNG on all difficulties (beg 1-3, int 4,5 mc 8,9) but

2.1. if a player has more than 1 suggestion in one group that shall only count as 1 to take away the advantage in RNG

2.2. if possible the song picked shall not be from the same player as from the week before

2.3. as soon as you have a song picked go to Songs Played, Press Ctrl-F and search for it to see if it has recently been played (at least a good year shall have passed!)

2.4. Test the song for Diff (all 3 paths), and quality (incl. Tone, Sync and RR) - generally one run and a short hit of the spacebar and checking if sections are selectable and RR does start will do.

2.5. If there are issues with the song please leave a comment in SSL - a lot issues can be repaired easily, and go back to 2.1

    3) So if you got 4 songs bring in order (an excellent hidden place for that is going to the Xmas/special occations Sheet and scroll down to line ~150 😉 )

3.1 missing rhy or very rarely lead arrangements can be left blank marked as n/a IF there has been an arrangement there in the week before, else choose one from Songs from the past,or - if the arrangement from the next level class is not way too hard, you can give that to the lower class also (that rule is still in testing, but i like it)!

3.2 if rhy and bass arrangements cannot match all 4 classes - choose from songs from the past, or as above give next higher arrangment to the lower class too.

3.3 If you do not use one of the arrangements for above reasons put them in as BONUS arrangements for the corresponding class or put it into the SSL-SPARE ARRANGEMENTS sheet in SSL document!

    4) So if you got that all fixed set up a new week (start it at 6-8pm CET on SAT)

4.1 - copy paste last weeks start to get going

4.2 - do check and correct if all scores are added to the leaderboard and name winners

4.3 - double check everything is all right, INCLUDING WORKING LINKS TO YOUR SELECTED SONGS

4.4 - Start the week. wait to be stoned to death.

    5) Set up new weeks leaderboard sheet in the google docs file - please do mind the format, start by duplicating last week, delete scores, also check if any player is to be auto-leveled up (99%+ lead, rhy, 99.5%+ bass on class highest diff song (3/5/7) - if yes, do it and make a post about it, enter new songs and difficulties. done.

    X) You can break the above rules and set up a hand selected e.g. special topic week from time to time

X2) If noone finds time to do a proper selection please also volunteer to set up a da capo week (week that has been played in the past) - do not forget to check working links there!!

    Rock, Rod!

See 2) ... randomly selecting songs is the only only way to serve a fair competition. If the organizer goes through the list and just picks songs he/she would like for the next week he is open for being accused of at least 2 biases. Firstly he will choose genres and bands of his likings and secondly and even heavier he will even likely select files he has been playing and practicing - hell of an advantage. I am superaware that over the last years the championship is all friendly and everyone is having fun even finishing the week on 2nd or 3rd place, but 5 or 6 years ago there has been most intense battling and even the random selection of the same players suggestion has led to a lot of heat and altering of the rules (see 2.2). Selecting randomly still brings up the issue that the organizer has the advantage of having testplayed the song and knowing it in advance but i never wil let that count because the orga on the other hand has the vast disadvantage of using 3-6 hours of his RS time in the week before to set up the next week.

Of course from time to time e.g. for special occasions hand-selections can be done (see X)), and like last week we have sensationale special themed hand selections!!! but for the regular weeks rng is the best way, and it´s fun cause you get to test songs you would have never touched.

    Rod.

    P.S:
"Is that why sometimes a selection does not match the difficulty rating of assigned to a specific class, like this week's Auctioned Rhythm?"
No and yes - the RNG is based on lead difficulty - so we end up with 4 perfect siff matches in lead. the rhy and bass are assigned by ascending diffs and if something is really missing (like bass mc often of course) there is either the fundus of 400 gone weeks to chose one or the spare arrangement arrangements or test another one from in that case bass only songs... i personally have not a big problem with the one or the other arrangement being a bit too hard from time to time as it might push players, not a fan of selecting new complete songs for individual missing arrangements for bonus arrangements are often left a bit alone snd on the other hand spare unused arrangements leave a bit of a mess with a lot of extra work if they shall not be forgotten. However the fundus of played arrangements is huge and those are already tested and rated and ready to be used to fill gaps.

Good song, so tried Rhythm again too:

....I think Prayer In The Dark is slightly easier on Rhythm than Auctioned. @ Rodman What do you think about swapping these two songs?

Thats exactly the order it is and was from beginning ofcthe week! (See LB file and SSL!)

I have no idea how that got confused in the opening post 😉

  9. ... it did not however.....

when i was filing down the sides i noticed that some of the frets were moving. Not much, but noticeable and thats a NONONONONO!!!!!! Yes - potentially the woodglue could have fixed that when cured, but thats way too much risk on a point where we are handling playability. Just a NONO!! So...

first i noticed that only at fret V - so i removed it, cleanded the slot, used medium visc. super glue, hammered it in and just to make sure clamped it down properly...

    42227514ry.jpg

    42227515zl.jpg

.... of course in the curing time i couldn´t stop thinking and the thought that it´s unoptimal kept pushing my stomach harder and harder.... so i went down and started testing really intense on all the frets, and i found a 2nd one and a 3rd one where my pressure resulted in .... felt movement. Nothing to be seen and captured on a pic, but noticeable for sure...

So.... i started removing all frets of course...
I got lucky cause i only had one little tear-out spot and even that is mini and would be hidden almost completely or completely under the fret, and in no way a optical issue, i am gonna fix it with sawdust and glue i think before refretting.

    42227516yl.jpg

and to prepare the slots - even better that time with a small triangular file so less breakout at refrets

    42227517vy.jpg

Good thing ... i am very skilled in fretjobs by now i think, at least i am very satisfied with the results but i was scared of having to do or doing refrets. I´m not no more.

it was sunday - so no hammering ...

    42227518gd.jpg

.... but will today or tomorrow....

In fact that´s my first major drawback and that´s good. I´m a problem solver, i like to quickly develop sollutions and learn from processes. It would be half the fun if it just went too smooth all the way, plus it makes aware to not develop sloppiness.

    Life is cool. Rock!

Hah..... now to something i have been soooooo waiting for 😄

I think before fretting is the best timepoint to oild it down once, ain´t it 😉

let´s go.. I decided to use the fancy stuff for first layer... i hope it doesn´t add too much own-color

    42227489dt.jpg

looks damn transparent on the paper

    42227490ur.jpg

    yay, just one glimpse

    42227491jr.jpg

time to use that wonderful tool for the first time

    42227492dh.jpg

supeglue or standard glue.... i had decided superglue already but ultra-last minute switched to standard wood glue for it might be a lot easier in the re-fret process....... will i regret that????
