  1. some bass This was rated an 8 last time it was played, but I like a 7 rating for it.
  2. I was wondering what people would say on that one. That is why it is a bonus selection. I scored worse than the Masterclass song on it, but it looks so easy and repetitive. So what would you rate it?

  4. I get my wife to sit on the couch and knit while I play songs she likes Time together and music.
  5. The week is flying, haven't gotten near enough work in on these songs.
  6. Sometimes a song comes along and puts you in your place....
  7. Thanks for pushing me on the solo. With the song in G major it was mostly a pentatonic Em solo. But it was interesting just looping that section and playing, I found a solo emerging, and that was cool to see. What is next....hmmm. So I have two thoughts: We could do just another straight learning a song. For this maybe 7 Nation Army by the White Stripes, or Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple? Or, There are few songs that I think would suit the "spoken word" style we have been messing around with. I'm thinking more of a cover with a different feel. These are not really guitar heavy songs, but it might be interesting to see what we can do with them. This strays a bit from our initial idea for these challenge songs, so I want to know if that is something you are interested in. Two Cadillacs by Carry Underwood (but I really don't care for her version) caught my ear recently, or something by Leonard Cohen might work. Bird on the Wire or Everybody Knows come to mind. Blake Shelton's Ol' Red could be fun too. I must be in a story telling song mood.
  8. @Rodman - I finally finished my attempt at our challenge song. I've been stuck with this half done for the better part of this week, but I finally got a solo figured out and laid down. To start, I broke out my 12 string and got a take I was happy with. You can see in the screenshot that I used a piezo mic as well as an MXL mic. I still get some weird buzz on the high notes, but I suspect it me me not the guitar setup. The 12 string neck is wider and fretting takes more pressure so it is challenging to just pick up and play. I then laid down the vocals. I struggled to find the range (think I should have changed the tuning), so I recorded both a lower and higher take. I ended up using the higher take for chorus. I have like 4 effects on the vocals, one being an auto-tune type of plugin so your ears don't bleed. Then this sat for a few days as I struggled with the solo. My violinist wasn't up to it. I even considered just leaving the solo out. I finally sat down today and made myself noodle around and find something. After 17 takes I hit upon the one you hear. It is pretty much a pentatonic E minor scale I think. I like the guitar tone I found for it...the echo fits the mood of the song.
  9. Just a note on the SSL @Rodman, since Motive turned the spreadsheet over to you I don't have write access to the Songs Playd or the Songs from the Past sheets. Not sure if that was the case for any others.
  10. I think you both are correct, I think the bass songs were a copy-paste error. @Rodmanare you able to update the original post or does @Gamut have to?
  11. I hate to see people feeling like their songs aren't ever picked, but I understand the frustration. I have started helping set up the new weeks, and man, it is quite a bit of work! When no one has time to screen songs for the week we get a Da Capo week from the past. This is getting more frequent because there aren't a lot of us setting up the new weeks. So, what can be done to make this easier and get your songs picked? Here are some of my thoughts from my few years participating in the Championships. 1. Check if there is an Official DLC version for the song you want played. We can't choose songs with ODLC unless they are on-disc songs from RS2014. If you put a song that has ODLC on the selection sheet it will never be picked. 2. Before you add your song to the selection spreadsheet play it through on all 3 paths. Check that they are in sync on each path. Is the chart good? Rate each path, even if it is only a rough "beginner, intermediate, advanced" type of rating. It doesn't have to be perfect, but rated songs are easier to plug into a week quickly. 3. Find beginner songs. If you want your songs picked more, the biggest need is for beginner class songs. Intermediate and Advanced always get a lot of songs selected, but beginner we usually don't have very many to chose from. 4. To help out more you can rate other songs on the song selection spreadsheet. When different people rate a song it is easier to get an accurate rating for a given song. 5. Volunteer to help set up weeks or update the spreadsheets. Many hands make light work, especially since we all have lives outside of the Championships. 6. Be respectful and courteous in your comments. We all want rockin' tunes to play each week, but if we can't have civil discourse it drives people (both participants and organizers) away. (This isn't a comment on anything specific, just a reminder) 7. Keep in mind that the songs picked each week are generally selected randomly unless it is a Da Capo week or a themed week that someone comes up with. The dice gods are sometimes fickle. (My unlucky dice cleansing rituals will require a separate much longer post) Ok, the public service announcement is over. Please resume your regularly scheduled ROCK!
  12. Ice skating with your son...I hope you had the time of your life That was nice. Your guitar playing is so clean and accurate, these challenge songs have shown me how hard that is. Your playing does just what rhythm guitar is supposed to do. I wish your vocals were louder, this song sounds naturally in your voice range and I thought the vocals sounded very good. I liked the whispering chorus a lot. Solo, as always, tasteful, nice, fit the mood of the song. I have to say, you kinda put me in a laid back mood for the rest of the day. I enjoyed the photo, it looks beautiful there and I'm enjoying those shots of another land. I may try to find some to share too. I'll get mine laid down soon. I've got the song down, trying to rope my daughter in to play the violin solo.
  13. You guys make it look so easy too! You guys push me but I wouldn't have it any other way.
  14. Thanks! I didn't think I was ready either. Sometimes you just gotta jump right in!
  15. Thank you for your kind words. I think this is one of my better recordings. Green Day - Good Riddance, sounds good! I like that one. I don't really care for Green Day, but there are a suspicious number of songs they do that I do like. And I have to say, his lyrics are good and he does so much with simple three chord progressions. So maybe I do like Green Day.
