  1. I thought I would share a project that @Rodman and I recently finished.

I'm taking a recording and mixing class, and one of the assignments needed a one minute minimum recorded piece with three tracks, then we had to overdub two more tracks.  Most of the class are music majors, so I assume it was no big deal for them, however I was at a loss for what to do.  Rodman happened to message me, so I asked if he would record a few chord progressions that I could try to do something with.  Man, he was all over it and within a few hours had a verse and chorus section recorded. I put some Band in a Box drums to it, noodled out a melody and a song started taking shape. I've been wanting to write a song for a while, so this seemed like a good opportunity. I wrote some lyrics about the coronavirus lockdown and recorded them as an overdub. I sent it over to Rodman and he recorded lyrics for the chorus, and we each recorded a solo.  I mixed it using what I've been learning, and boom...a song!  So here it is, Lockdown, and original song by Rodman and Diceslinger!

Yay... first impression - goddamit, that´s the original drumline, and it´s not a cheap midi track - ugh! Who would have thought how a familiar feeling that creates. How did you strip it? Did you find a multitrack or do you have the magic tool for that?
Very very nice guitar work, bravo. For the singing - one, and maybe the most unexpected things i have learned in our unholy journey is that singing is fun, and it´s essential in covers for keeping away the boredom. Here i really can hear how much fun it must have been to record that together. I really hope i can get my 9yo daughter to duet one of the next ones with me, though she probably will silence me and do it on her own to stop hurting her ears or smthg. Only problem is that she hasn´t begun to learn English so thats a bit of an issue, but i see what i can do.
For your mixing - flawless. First i thought the vocals were too dominant, but thats not the case, i think it´s pretty much the grading you will have in the radio-friendly pro production. Thx for the cool pic and story.

So... my turn - what´s next.............sir i love to say we gotta do some metal, let´s go for some hammer riffs to wake up the neighbours, i´m not gonna make it too hard, for sure not soo easy, mdeth symphony of destruction, if we dare?!

    Thanks!

For the drums, I use an app on my phone called I am A Band.  It is free and you can upload a song on you phone and it will separate the parts.  You can then play them on your phone, or export them.  I use google drive for shuttling the file back and forth from computer to phone and back.  It works well especially for drums, guitar and vocals, there are some odd artifacts, but in this case the drums were very usable.  I used the same technique for the vocals (then distorted the heck out of them) on our Green Day Time of Your Life song if you remember.

Oohh...Megadeth....Didn't own that one.  Nice riff, a handful of sections repeated, should be learnable.  That solo though.....gonna have to figure out how to fake something for that part!  Sounds good, game on!

  3. @Rodman Well, here it is, I finally got my lead vocalist scheduled and recorded.  I'm getting better at recording usable takes, so I have two takes on guitar and panned one left and one right.  The drums are the original stripped from the song.  It wasn't as compelling to play as I thought it might be, but my daughter and I had a blast recording the vocals!

The picture is one from my childhood photo albums.  It is an abandoned steam locomotive, and I think it was one that the cement plant my dad worked for used to haul rock from the quarry.  I'm asking some train enthusiasts about it to see if it still exists.  I'm pretty sure there were two that the company owned, and the other is at a train museum in Colorado.  I remember we got to climb on it and pretend to drive it, pretty cool for a six year old boy who loved trains!

@diceslinger guitar, bass, vocals, no post recording effects whatsoever

Ok found time for a lil info. I though suggest you listen first, read later.
That was much fun again. There are some songs i really have in my brain accurately though not listening to them for years. That´s one of those. Right the moment i read we had to do that i was thinking i´ll make a very basic campfiry version guitarwise to remember (as you know was the reason to start the whole thing). So for a start i listened to the song once, bought the dlc, played the guitar parts, then looked at the chords from the "official" UG version and recorded a playthrough with my standard clean tone on my strat which made it to the recording. Added a very backgroundy urban kit drumline, recorded a simple bassline and had a lot of fun singing it a few times (i hope your ears don´t hurt too much), i couldn´t use any effects on vocals and instruments because when setting up the project on my Zoom R24 i chose 48kHz instead if 44.1, and when all was in  the box and i wanted to start adding a lil chorus on guitar "44.1 kHz only" popped up.... However ... sign from the gods or rookie mistake, so all i did was pan the guitar and bass on either sides and mixed the volumes... isn´t it insane how different that all sounds when you go cellphone/stereosystem/headphones. Thx for that choice, happy with the result, cannot waitr for your version.

Picture is from Mount Dobratsch, taken by my wife last week on a Ski tour, blurred vision is caused by Sahara Sand that has been blown here all the way - oh i wish i had been there for that view!

    Rod.

This is a very laid back campfire version, you captured that well.  I really don't have much else to add, you wrapped it up into a tight little package that feels very complete.  Nice!

I learned in my class the generally you don't pan the drums and bass (the rhythm section), you leave it center.  This is a legacy from before stereo was a thing, but there still may be cases where a recording is played in mono, or someone is closer to one speaker than the other, so the practice still holds.  This isn't meant as feedback for your song, for what we are doing this doesn't really apply.  I just thought it was interesting and would pass it on to you.

I love the pictures you use, it is cool to see your view of the world.  I'm trying to do that a bit too.  My Stone photo was at a nearby lake where they were skimming the surface of the lake to load airplanes with water to fight a bad forest fire.  The smoke is why it looks hazy in the distance.

I'll get my version laid down this week, just have to find some time and schedule my singer 🙂

I had a hard time getting the the hammer on slide combo consistently.  Sounded pretty good though.

Oh boy!!! That songpick of mine was golden. Wonder what you would have answered when i would have told you like 4 months ago that in march you were gonna do a song where laying down the proper rhythm and lead arrangement as well as your very well recorded solo using the DT Whammy would just be natural accessories done without pain because you were focusing on getting the vocals down full force............ dammit, cool. It´s such a cool small but immensly powerful song that cannot be done emotionless, and you did great. Fun thing that you doubled the chorus while i doubled the verse. Very good mix with perfect fitting bg music - on cellphone the music volume is too low, that has to be listened on a stereo system - where its great. Your guitar playing feels very precise and chilled as it should, and band in a box did great support....what a production!

    What is next 😄 ?

Yep, that was a really good pick, not one I would have thought of off the top of my head, but I'm so glad to have worked on it.  Powerful song!

I was looking, I think we have done 17 songs since we started this last June.  Wow!  You are spot on, I can't believe how far we have come.  This has pushed me in a good way, having to recording and finish a song really makes me resolve issues with my playing.

For the next song.....how about Soul Asylum - Runaway Train?
