ignition collection question

i really like the new ignition, but i'm feeling rather dense at the moment. on the left you have the pulldown with choice to download only, or download and add to collection. can someone enlighten me about the collection

When you add items to your collection, you essentially follow the item.  You'll get notifications when the charter makes updates.
