  1. Hey everyone, I'm going to take a bit of a break from the championship, hoping to come back in a few months. I've got some minor muscle injuries in my left hand, which were not caused by playing too much bass, but I'm hoping they'll recover better if I ease up on playing for a while. (Just barely made it through the 55 minutes of Alestorm, probably shouldn't have even attempted that in retrospect). It's been an amazing year for me being part of the championship. I've greatly enjoyed taking part in the discussions, learned a lot of cool new songs, and have been motivated to keep improving. Keep rocking, and hope to be here again in a while .... but don't y'all improve TOO much in the meantime....
  2. @ cacahuate51 Thanks for the fixes. I no longer have inaccurate scores posted, but I do have a missing score for DJ Cassidy now the incorrect one (99.89) has been removed. I posted a 99.36 which does not appear. By the way, is it just me, or is intermediate guitar really hard this week?
  3. The leaderboard incorrectly gave me a score 99.89 on DJ Cassidy - should be 99.36. I initially misread that as an incorrect score of 99.89 on Hit The Floor, soI thought I would try to fix it by legitimately hitting that score, but didn't quite make it...
  4. I don't have any advice on the bass selection, and not sure if this even qualifies as relationship advice. A few weeks ago my wife was waiting for me in the car while I popped into Guitar Center as I often do to pick up strings or picks. When I came out in a few minutes and presented her with a small gift - Pink Floyd coffee mug inscribed "dark side of the brew" - she quickly caught on and knew that something big was up, but was not nearly as upset as she might have been otherwise when I wheeled out the Roland FP30X digital piano - could barely even fit the damn thing in the Honda Civic ...
  5. I'm starting to get the hang of D drop C. Just turned the volume way up an played really softly so the low string doesn't slap the frets. On this song that worked great until the last section, where it's begging you to slam the low string at high intensity.. so I did And once you're tuned to D drop C, you've got to have a go or two at this cover of a Journey classic...
  6. Happy New Week, everyone! Last night's Dream Theater show was good, but maybe not the best. The crowd was pretty uninvolved for the first half of the show, not a lot of cheering or applause, and James seemed pretty bummed about not being able to bring higher energy to the crowd and the first half of the show wasn't great. After intermission, a lot of people left, and the remaining hardcore fans got into it a lot more, the energy and enjoyment level got to where it should be for a good strong show. Oddly enough, the anti-Swift effect may be at play here. This show was in a small arena away from large cities, and ticket prices were pretty reasonable (I paid just $45 for a decent seat). The low prices may have brought a lot of casual fans rather than rabid hardcore fans who would be willing to pay the big bucks if they had to. I now regret I didn't opt for the higher-priced tickets and take the train up to Boston to see the sold-out show tonight at Berklee School of Music (Petrucci, Myung, and Portnoy founded the band while they were students at Berklee. The Fourth Wall Blu-Ray is recorded at Berklee, and highly recommended - by me at least, certainly not by my wife..) Anyway, it's a good day today if I'm still singing the verse from The Spirit Carries On: Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where do we go when we die? What lies beyond And what lay before? Is anything certain in life?
  7. Bad news good - good news scenario for me this week. The bad news is I don't think I'll have any time to try to improve these scores on Friday night. But that's more than cancelled out by the good news ... because I'm going to see the Dream Theater Anniversary show on Friday ...at a regional venue just a few miles from my house
  8. Is there a place can I download the Drop-D version of Rise Up? I'm having huge buzzing and note recognition issues on the original tuning.
  9. This is such a great song for the championship. Just one of the multiple terrific songs and bands I keep learning about here every week. Despite the many frustrating bits, it's really fun to both listen to and play, and the tight drum track is simultaneously rewarding when you hit a passage and punishing when you immediately know you've missed a passage. It's like when the teacher hits you over the knuckles with a ruler when you pronounce a word wrong - ok, I'm not quite old enough to have experienced that but I know people who have...
  10. The low string on this D drop C tuning is pretty rough on my 4-string bass. (For the Alestorm with the even lower C standard I was able to tune my 5-string up a half step and that worked great). I'm experimenting with turning up the volume really loud and then playing really softly to avoid the string slapping the frets, anyone have any thought on this for the really loose tunings? Or does anyone have experience with drop pedals for bass? I've heard they're ok for guitar but not so great on bass.
  11. I had to try that once - not in any hurry to try it again any time soon... If there is one section that sneaks up on you - where some advance practice would definitely help - it's this one: PS The bass part has 16,256 notes - but who's counting...
