  1. Thanks for the input @@Aludog Does anybody else want to share ideas, opinions? Do you agree or disagree? @LaceyB @ArnoldRimmer @Leorstef @@bernixix and everyone.
  2. Here are my votes (of course, this is highly subjective) : Alicia Keys - If I Aint Got You > Yay Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar > Yay Black Eyed Peas (all of them) > Nay Bruno Mars (all of them) > I'd say yay, especially 'Treasure' Justin Timberlake (all of them) > probably preconceived thinking but...nay Kool and the Gang - Take My Heart > Yay Lou Bega - Mambo Number 5 > Hell Nay! Luther Vandross - Never Too Much > Yay Rihanna (all of them) > Nay Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five - The Message > Yay Sade > Yay Katy Perry > Nay Britney > Who? Hall & Oates > Why not? Madonna > Yay for Like A Virgin, Material Girl would be a Nay though China Girl and Let's Dance by David Bowie > Nay All the other songs, I need to listen to them first cause I've never heard of them (the songs, not the artists).
  3. @@Rockinbiscuit WOW!! I'm....speechless What about the cat ?? :D
  4. Sounds good. Personnally I wouldn't vote for the RHCP for the same reason as you. Jamiroquai is an interesting case; the two first albums were clearly acid-jazz, then they took a turn towards funk-fueled pop, yet the 'pop' aspect stands out more than the funk one does, to my ears anyway. I don't consider them a true funk band (but I would more easily consider the Brand New Heavies as such). Michael Jackson is another example : I included the tracks from 'Off The Wall' in the list but I intentionnally left out his later albums, including Thriller. I wasn't sure what to do with this one, but eventually I didn't include because it simply doesn't sound like a soul/funk album to me.
  5. Well that's the thing...if the year of release is no longer considered then anything goes : some of the Red Hot Chili Peppers could fit in, some Jamiroquai or Prince like you wrote....this would bring up the debate of 'how do we classify music by genre', i.e what makes a song a funk song or a soul song etc... Debate is good I guess :)
  6. List has been updated :)
  7. Mwahaha so it wasn't just my pervert self fantasizing on some legendary movie scene ;)
  8. For just a second I read 'Sharon Stone' instead of 'Sharon Jones' and I thought "what? she did songs? six??"
  9. Thanks @@Aludog These are quite recent tracks so I'm not sure if they should be included in the list...there's some Tower of Power stuff that I didn't include either because it's from the late 80s. Let me know, good people, how you want it done
  10. Oooooooooooh man, it just keeps gettin' better and better!
  11. And by the way, I wonder what it's like to be in Jerry Barnes' shoes...he's the *new* Chic bass player, and of course people will always compare him to Bernard Edwards...and when you come after such an iconic player, it must be challenging, to say the least, no matter how good you are :
  12. This guy had such an incredible life...I love that style he has
  13. WOW! This one is gonna be my new default homepage !! And yes, I'm gonna add the Afrobeat CDLCs in the list.
  14. Hey y'all funkateers B) I wanted to share some really good stuff with you, it's a 3-disc compilation of old school soul music, most of which was heavily sampled by hip-hop artists in the 90s and 00s so it's a kind of 'go-back-to-the-roots' thing. It's called 'Shaolin Soul' episodes 1, 2 and 3. You will find incredible things from the likes of Al Green, Syl Johnson, Ann Peebles, Teddy Pendergrass, The Jackson 5 etc... nothing but quality here. Here are just a few exemples from episode 2 : (This one is on my to-do list ;)) Enjoy your week-end :)
  15. For what it's worth...I'll test the bass path for you :D Did you include only GnR solos or some other stuff like the Lenny Kravitz songs he played on?
  16. Is your book called 'The Great James Brown Rhythm Sections Funk Masters' ? Cause I have that one If it's another one, then please shoot me a PM !
  17. @ thanks for pointing out the missing songs, although I can't find 'Superstition' anywhere
  18. I know someone will be more than happy when you do it, and by someone I mean @ ;)
  19. So I noticed that there aren't any 'Sly & The Family Stone' CDLCs in the database (yet ;)) and while looking for good tabs I stumbled upon this on Amazon and other book stores : http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61IZ08ICXHL.jpg I think I'll indulge myself :)
  20. Oh yeah that one...I have it in my 'transcriptions sites' folder but it's not really the "best-looking" site (I find it very poorly structured) I never paid much attention to it...guess I'll have to take a serious look.
  21. So let's start with the sharing, shall we? :) Here's a short selection of my favorite bass transcriptions websites, from which I took most of the tabs that I used to create my CDLCs in this list (these sites are very 60s- and 70s-oriented) : http://www.basslessons.be/transcriptions.php : quite an impressive collection (almost 150 songs) and they tend to tab a lot of old school stuff http://www.thebassment.info/transcriptions.html : very nice as well, covers all sorts and all generations of music http://www.cocosbassment.com/transcriptions/ : a bit similar to the previous one in terms of songs' choice http://nicebasslines.com/bass-transcriptions : lots of cool stuff too in here, although the site has not been updated for quite a while http://www.redtenbachersfunkestra.com/basscharts/ : excellent songs' choice, but you'll only find notations here, no tabs http://www.lessonsthatrock.com/resources/free-bass-tabs/ : I found this one recently, they seem to have A LOT of songs with the matching guitar tabs as well All these sites are free, yet they seem to offer more interesting material than monetized sites like MySongBook... What are your favorite sites?
  22. Yes I know, you're probably talking about the Jaco Pastorius, Weather Report etc...I even included some disco like The Bee Gees or Patrice Rushen...and I'm not entirely sure that Queen belongs here either but I figured what the hell :D Good bass lines in the end...
  23. Hello everyone! Welcome to the Soul/Funk Appreciation Society. Here you will find a place to discuss the soulful sounds of the good ol' days, from the early 60s to the very early 80s until today, in their most recent forms. Anyone is free and welcome to join the group, whether you're a charter or not.You can include a small icon in your profile signature if you'd like, I made one that you can find here but you're absolutely free to create your own. Please don't expect binding rules or any kind of leadership in here. This place is meant to share thoughts, ideas, suggestions and of course music! Think of it as a community, much like the ones they had in the 60s (except we wash our hair :D) So here's a list of songs that have already been released, there must be a few ones missing so please point me to these songs and I'll add the links.
