  1. @Rodman I finally got some time to record my version of Heaven's on Fire. This one turned out to be really fun! Usually I record each part until I get a good take. This time I took a different approach this time and recorded it in sections. I got a drum track from Band in a Box, then I recorded the first verse on guitar, then recorded the vocals for it, and for some recorded a vocal "chorus" an octave higher. Then I did the same for the next section and so on. I put the solo in last, I fear it is just random flailing. I tried to tease around the resolving note and let it ring out at the end of the solo. Not sure how successful I was. I watched a video about fixing up vocals that the guy broke it up in sections, so I thought I would try that approach for my recording. The idea was that I would try to use an auto-tune plugin on it, but honestly it didn't make me sound much better, so I ditched it. I ended up with a chorus effect and a compressor on the vocals and that was it. I took a screenshot of the DAW for the video still, I wasn't feeling creative photographing the guitar, so I thought it interesting. I'm using Cakewalk which is now free.
  2. I've posted some noting fingered or with pick because I'm challenging myself to getting better at fingered bass. I'm taking the beginner and intermediate songs and trying them fingered to get some practice. And like any good challenge, making it public helps keep myself accountable
  3. Some improvements My best with a pick. Need to do it in SA Probably the best I get on lead But while I'm at it and have it stuck in my head Just for fun And something for my class I just like this song, so good
  4. Nice! I noticed a few new steps. First, you recorded the bass part, nice touch! Second, the doubled vocals on the chorus, it seems you are trying some things out with mixing. What are you using to do that? Is it a fullblown DAW or something you can do with your Trio pedal? Very nicely done. I'm amazed that you heard the song one day and had it ready to perform the next. You really are getting better at understanding the song structure to turn them around so quickly! Your solo fit in well I thought. I wondered if you let the notes at first part of the solo ring out longer that it might feel more cohesive. It felt like a lick, then a rest, then another lick, then another rest, then the solo got serious. I'm pretty excited, I'm signed up to take a university course in audio recording technology this semester. I'm hoping it will help we take my recordings to the next level. I'm hoping it won't slow me down too much with our challenge, but it is clear which one of us is the speedy one
  5. I was thinking that it would be useful if someone wrote up a tutorial on how to do the pitch shifting with Song Manager. I hate to see people not want to play songs in low tunings, but I get it why they don't.
  6. I entered the score in as 96% because it was in Learn a Song mode and that is what I could identify as a valid screen shot. I'm not sure if any other counter for percentage is valid, so I will defer that decision to @Rodman.
  7. My advice is to download and install the CustomsForge Song Manager and use the repair option for any CDLC. That fixes quite a few issues. Let us know if it doesn't Vobeat - yes, that one is fun to play to me! As for the difficulty, songs are generally selected by the lead path, then the others are filled in. There are a few things we can do if there isn't a bass part fitting a class. We can leave no song for the class, we can fill it with an unused song from a prior week, or we can pick a song from the past. This week I chose songs based on a theme (rather than from the song selection spreadsheet) and I had a hard time find a fitting beginner and masterclass song. The Cult - Outlaw song had been chosen as a beginner song from a previous week on bass so I used it. Sometimes there are songs that at 95% beginner song, but have a tricky part that qualifies them a higher rating. That is my guess on the rating for that song. You will find that the song ratings are an art rather than a science and any discussion about the ratings is welcome. There are always songs that some find easy and others find difficult. I thought the bass part for both the Lone Rider and Criminal were hard, but both only have 3-4 different patterns throughout the whole song. For Criminal specifically I didn't think a 99.5% score was enough to level a participant up to masterclass. By the way, I recommend everyone listen to Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence. It is amazing, and quite the contrast to Criminal!
  8. I can't get this song out of my head. Really like it, I'm going to have to check out the whole album
  9. For not liking Green Day I really like some of their songs. Crazy. This one is so fun to play
  10. week 2 of my plectrum-less challenge. I guess I don't need to go back to beginner, but intermediate is providing me with the right level of challenge. And yes, even tried this one fingered
  11. I agree, it is challenging. When I played it to rate it I thought it a 6 or 7, but lead was rated a 5.5 in week 170, so I went with that 5.5 rating.
  12. New week is up, thanks for your patience. Also, thanks for the great week @Gamut, I really enjoyed those songs.

  14. The new week will be a hour or two late this week, I have to go straighten out some things at work. Probably 9:00 GMT.
  15. Just post it as a new reply. We don't go back to old replies to check scores, it is too confusing. Feel free to post as many improvements as you need! It is fun to see people's progress throughout the week.
  16. Welcome to the championships! Your rhythm screenshot is good, but your lead screenshot is missing the Streak, so isn't valid. Can you give it another run and post a screenshot with the accuracy and streak?
  17. For the guitar effect I think it is the Ping Pong delay pedal that gives it that rotary sound, but I'm still learning all the setting on the pedals. I'm really liking how I can record it clean, then use the Bias FX VST to make it sound like it was recorded with amps and pedals. I will probably create an account on vimeo or dailymotion, but I have enjoyed trying to make these song my own enough to get past the copywrite filter. I feel like it makes me put more of myself into them. However, it is becoming clear to me that you are learning songs to play, while I seem to be learning more about recording and post-processing the music. For our next song, how about something that rocks a bit? Something not acoustical, but something you could turn up the distortion and rock at a guitar store. I am thinking Kiss - Heaven's on Fire. What do you think?
  18. @Rodman well, I have to say Wonderwall didn't really grow on me, but I did try some cool stuff with it. My lead singer was booked, and I didn't have much luck with singing along. The vocal phrasing that isn't on the downbeat throws me off. So I used the app called I Am the Band that separates the different parts, vocals, drums, guitar, etc. I recorded along with the drums and vocal, found a cool tone and I was pretty happy. Then Youtube blocked it. I guess I did use the vocals, so maybe it was deserved. So I put a distortion filter, put it through an amp and pedal effect like the vocals were guitar and got a pretty punk/grunge sounding song. Now youtube is just complaining about me using the melody. So I feel all punk sticking it to the man!
  19. Getting better at this one, but my fingers just forget what to do every now and again Got the platinum pick that was eluding me
  20. I don't think you are wrong...reset mine to 0 and it seemed better in SA. More "perfect" notes, but that is one time anecdotal. Will keep it for a while and see.
