  1. If you've ever worked with reel-to-reel tape, then you'd understand why tape speed becomes an issue (I don't think it's the tape so much as the machine used, but from my experience, tape stretches a bit, which changes things too). So I'd wager a guess that the overwhelming majority of "de-tuned" songs are the fault of this, not a choice by the artist.

This would be different for a band like Oasis, who probably never recorded on tape.

I know that some guitarists experiment with different tunings. But it's really impractical in a live setting, unless you're some mega-band and you've got your own personal tech standing by to take care of your various tunings. So again, I'd wager a guess that most guitarists who expect to play their music live stick to one standard tuning or another, or limit the number of tunings to the number of guitars they bring onstage with them.

It's probably a personality thing. Me, I HATE having to retune my guitar. Just hate it. It's even worse on the banjo, because re-tuning is a huge part of playing old-time music. In Rocksmith terms, it makes no sense having to retune to A443 or something similar. It's easy to correct a song to A440 (since they were probably played that way in the first place).

But it's easy enough to deal with -- I simply don't play non-standard tuning songs, unless I really really want to play that song.

This is how I deal with it, too.

Though while people are talking about songs that are off-pitch, I'll throw AC/DC's It's A Long Way To The Top in. The guitars and bass are tuned to be in pitch with Bon Scott's bagpipes. And Satchel did something similar when I saw Steel panther play at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh, and they had a piper on stage for Community Property.

  2.

I was forced to wear paisley pattern PJ's as a small child** and you actually want to do this to your guitar?!?!!!

Lay off the acid, man!  ;)

** I still bear the emotional scars..

You're from Scotland? Sheesh. At least your folks never made you wear a dress. :-P

Apples and oranges. If you want to make that tired old gag, at least get it right and call it a skirt.

  3. Well, the fact is I pretty much never spend time listening to music in the house. So vinyls and CDs are impractical. Plus, if ridiculous audiophiles are to be believed, I'd need to spend twice as much on headphones as I did on my mp3 player to be able to hear even a lossless format, and, well... fuck that.

Also, I'm not as pretentious as the beardy twat in that video.

  4.

Well, as a Scot, I don't really care that much.

Though I expect by the time the first match is done(Brazil v Croatia, IIRC), I'll want England to do badly for no reason other than to spite the BBC's commentary team, who won't have been talking about the game. At kick-off, they'll mention that the 4th official's father's brother's nephew's uncle's cousin's former room-mate once went on a business trip to London for a weekend, and they'll spend the rest of the game talking about the EPL.

You might be surprised, they might actually talk about Brazil and Croat............... Who am I kidding. Yep, they'll be talking about Rooney's world cup haircut, Woy's favorite colour (and fave ice-cream) and whether or not Gerrard has any studs on his boots (due to his propensity to slip a lot).

If I still drank, it would be a good opportunity to play 1966.

  5. Well, it's accurate as far as it goes. SoundScan collects infiormation on music sales in the US and Canada, and that's used to generate the Billboard 100 lists and stuff like that. But it's data only goes back as far as 1991, and Thriller was released more than 8 years earlier, with sales estimated at 29 million copies in the US.

I admit, it's kind of nitpicky, since sales at that level are pretty damn special. And Thriller is that bit more special. Kind of like Nadal and Federer in tennis, I guess.

  6. No, but it's the one I prefer to use when trying out guitars in shops.

I have a MG10 but it's too limited to be really usefull on the long run but the MG15 you show have many more option so it seems like a good choice. The line6 spider are some really good amps that i can only tell you to go for it if you found one cheap enough for your budget. Know that a low power will limit you quickly, the one that can do more can do less, i have a Mustang III and it's a beast (100W) so if you don't want to move it around, i clearly think you should go for more power but if you need to transport it everywhere better stick to some low power that will be lighter.

No, low power is good for a practice amp. The speakers for bigger amps are designed to give best response when you're pushing most of the amp's power through the; at low volumes, the sound you get tends to be dull and, for want of a better term, farty.

If you're just playing in your bedroom, 20W and an 8" speaker will make one hell of a racket - particularly if you angle it upwards, so the sound is projected into the room, rather than muffled by the carpet.

  9. Depends on the recording. For example, Motorhead's No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith is a fairly sloppy affair. For almost all the tracks, I'd probably prefer, for DLC, studio arrangements. It would, however, be interesting at least to see the version of Ace Of Spades that Motorhead played on No Sleep At All(or the one used on their appearance on The Young Ones), with Wurzel and Phil Campbell on guitar.

Which raises another issue with live tracks - particularly with bands that have had lineup changes, which one do you use?

One other thing that's worth mentioning is that many album tracks fade out at the end, something which I've personally never seen a band do live. As an example, the GnR song Nightrain - album version fades out in an outro solo, whereas live, the solo finishes, and an end chorus played.

I think people should chart the version they prefer. If other people would choose differently, then we should pull our fingers out and get charting ourselves.
