  1. Sounds good. Personnally I wouldn't vote for the RHCP for the same reason as you. Jamiroquai is an interesting case; the two first albums were clearly acid-jazz, then they took a turn towards funk-fueled pop, yet the 'pop' aspect stands out more than the funk one does, to my ears anyway. I don't consider them a true funk band (but I would more easily consider the Brand New Heavies as such).

Michael Jackson is another example : I included the tracks from 'Off The Wall' in the list but I intentionnally left out his later albums, including Thriller. I wasn't sure what to do with this one, but eventually I didn't include because it simply doesn't sound like a soul/funk album to me.

  2. J-Funk: Perhaps you should have named it the Classic Soul/Funk Appreciation Society. I have assumed that is what you meant, which is why I didn't list all the 80s and beyond soul, funk, R&B, and... uh, hip-hop CDLCs I have downloaded. I suppose Jamiroquai and Bruno Mars qualify now. Oh, and at least one of the songs (or is it the other?) by the dude on the left playing a Strat.

Well that's the thing...if the year of release is no longer considered then anything goes : some of the Red Hot Chili Peppers could fit in, some Jamiroquai or Prince like you wrote....this would bring up the debate of 'how do we classify music by genre', i.e what makes a song a funk song or a soul song etc...

Debate is good I guess  :)

  3. I personally see no reason why we have to make temporary restrictions in the song list as well. We already put a genre restriction on it and I think that should be good enough. Good soul music should be appreciated even if it's contemporary. With the soul revival at the end of the 90's there's a slow comeback of the genre and really good stuff has been produced in the last few years. Even artists like Amy Winehouse should have a place here (whose "Back In Black" album featured The Dap-Kings, backing band of Sharon Jones). :D

    List has been updated  :)

  4. And by the way, I wonder what it's like to be in Jerry Barnes' shoes...he's the *new* Chic bass player, and of course people will always compare him to Bernard Edwards...and when you come after such an iconic player, it must be challenging, to say the least, no matter how good you are :

  5. Hey y'all funkateers  B)

I wanted to share some really good stuff with you, it's a 3-disc compilation of old school soul music, most of which was heavily sampled by hip-hop artists in the 90s and 00s so it's a kind of 'go-back-to-the-roots' thing. It's called 'Shaolin Soul' episodes 1, 2 and 3. You will find incredible things from the likes of Al Green, Syl Johnson, Ann Peebles, Teddy Pendergrass, The Jackson 5 etc... nothing but quality here. Here are just a few exemples from episode 2 :

(This one is on my to-do list ;))

    Enjoy your week-end :)

  6. So I noticed that there aren't any 'Sly & The Family Stone' CDLCs in the database (yet ;)) and while looking for good tabs I stumbled upon this on Amazon and other book stores :

    I think I'll indulge myself :)

  7. So let's start with the sharing, shall we? :)

Here's a short selection of my favorite bass transcriptions websites, from which I took most of the tabs that I used to create my CDLCs in this list (these sites are very 60s- and 70s-oriented) :

http://www.basslessons.be/transcriptions.php : quite an impressive collection (almost 150 songs) and they tend to tab a lot of old school stuff

http://www.thebassment.info/transcriptions.html : very nice as well, covers all sorts and all generations of music

http://www.cocosbassment.com/transcriptions/ : a bit similar to the previous one in terms of songs' choice

http://nicebasslines.com/bass-transcriptions : lots of cool stuff too in here, although the site has not been updated for quite a while

http://www.redtenbachersfunkestra.com/basscharts/ : excellent songs' choice, but you'll only find notations here, no tabs

http://www.lessonsthatrock.com/resources/free-bass-tabs/ : I found this one recently, they seem to have A LOT of songs with the matching guitar tabs as well

All these sites are free, yet they seem to offer more interesting material than monetized sites like MySongBook...

    What are your favorite sites?

  8. There's some stuff in here that goes more in the direction of jazz/fusion which might not totally fit the bill but I'm not a genre nazi and I actually like that it's included here as well.

Yes I know, you're probably talking about the Jaco Pastorius, Weather Report etc...I even included some disco like The Bee Gees or Patrice Rushen...and I'm not entirely sure that Queen belongs here either but I figured what the hell :D Good bass lines in the end...

  9. Hello everyone!

Welcome to the Soul/Funk Appreciation Society. Here you will find a place to discuss the soulful sounds of the good ol' days, from the early 60s to the very early 80s until today, in their most recent forms.

Anyone is free and welcome to join the group, whether you're a charter or not.
You can include a small icon in your profile signature if you'd like, I made one that you can find here but you're absolutely free to create your own.

Please don't expect binding rules or any kind of leadership in here. This place is meant to share thoughts, ideas, suggestions and of course music! Think of it as a community, much like the ones they had in the 60s (except we wash our hair :D)

  10. I played version 1.7 on bass, the scroll speed is much better now and the tone's volume is also much more enjoyable. However I found the tone to be too agressive this time, too distorted. I think you could use the bass tone from U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name", it has a good rock feel but not too distorted.
