  1. I have to disagree with you about chords on bass: For one, it's essential to know chord shapes on bass to be able to play along fluently to any given chord progression and use arpeggios to their full extent and second, the use of chords over two, three or four strings can effectively enhance and enrich the low to mid end of a song. One just has to know when and how to use chords effectively and especially where to play them on the neck. I can think of quite a few great bass lines that make good use of (partial) chords at key points and I personally like to play around with chords as well. They are especially useful if the bass is the central element of a piece and therefore has to deliver more harmonic information than usual. So, all in all, I urge you to give chords on bass a chance and see them for what they are: a useful tool that you can get out whenever appropriate and that can help you create more interesting bass lines.

  2. @@Shinyditto12 Couldn't you do that in EoF then? Select the chord, press N and give it the appropriate name? Or doesn't that work with diminished chords or chords that use special characters?

Btw, just fyi, in your picture there are "F7maj(no5)" chords but the usual way to spell that would be "Fmaj7(no5)" because "D7" would imply a dominant seventh chord, so putting the "maj" before the "7" makes it more easily recognizable.

  3. @@RSBass Yeah, I realize now that it sounds a little harsh and it's always debatable how to play a certain passage but option 1 is pretty failsafe. Depending on the previous and following phrases though it might end up making things more difficult, so without context it's hard to judge the situation. Seeing what I see here, I'd use option 1.

  4. Bass players,

Would you prefer to play this section the first way or the second way?  It doesn't make any difference which one leads into the next section.  Any preferences?

    Thanks.

I disagree with the other guys. Option 1 is far better. With option 2 you get two open strings ringing out at the same time. No serious bass player would use option 2.

  5. I can't speak for the developers but I guess it pretty much depends on what RS supports natively. I honestly haven't looked at the chord database in RS, so I can't be sure but it would be strange if diminished chords aren't available, although they might not be displayed with a ° but just as "dim".

  6. Well, unfortunately, I was not able to do any song for the community but during the Easter holidays I hope that i can find the time to learn and do at least one. I'm happy to see that there is a page for progressive metal. I would have some suggestions for inclusion, in case people agree with my opinion. I did not see here Pink Floyd which, together with Dream Theater I would call no 1 as progressive bands, even if the styles are totally different. Then, we have Blind Guardian, Camel, Yes just to name a few. And many thanks for creating this page :)

    Cheers

@@albatross213 only lists Progressive Metal in this thread, hence the title. Most bands you mentioned are in the Progressive Rock thread.

  7. Yeah, the fact that they have only one GP (and it's apparently total crap) is why I didn't put Renaissance in the inspiration list though they're deserving of a place. Decent amount of text tabs, but it's unfair to expect anything to happen without GP files.

I think it's a good idea to post this link to a useful site with Renaissance midi and text tabs I found a long time ago: http://www.jtl.us/nlightsweb/lib/music.htm

It might help some, who are interested in working on Renaissance, to get started.

  8. Another good progressive rock band was Renaissance.   Songs worth a listen include:  Ashes are Burning; Carpet of the Sun; The Vultures Fly High; Ocean Gypsy; Can you understand?

Totally agree. I've been wanting to do some Renaissance for a long time but I need to transcribe some first because tabs are practically non-existent.

  9. Just wanted to say that it will still take a while to get the rest of the inventions done because I was working on something big over the last two weeks that I'm basically done with now. Though, I have to study for my exams as well, so I can't work on the inventions yet but I'll get them done afterwards.

  10. I'm working on a really big project right now and the file I'm working with in EoF (22.11.2015 Mac version) is about 2 hours 50 min long. When I try to generate a waveform or spectrogram I'm getting an error message. In case of the waveform it's non descriptive but in the case of the spectrogram it tells me "ALOGG failed to decode audio input". I'm guessing Allegro can't handle the sheer length of the file but is there any way I could still get a waveform? Working without it makes everything a bit more annoying.

I'll try it on Windows tomorrow with the latest version but I guess that won't change anything, will it?

  11. I'm really busy the next few days, so I won't be able to start working on the next few inventions before January 6, therefore I'll have to postpone Bachmas for a few days. Sorry, guys. :(

  12. I just realized that the newest toolkit supports the creation of song packs, so I'll release all fifteen inventions in song pack format at the end of Bachmas. Until then, you'll have to get them individually.

  13. @@BX5 If you're syncing to an actual recording, then I'd suggest using "Go Play Along" for the syncing process. I find it very easy to use and you'll find tutorials for that in the forum. If you're using audio (wav file) generated from GP then syncing should be as easy as setting the correct bpm at the correct place directly in EoF. I can't tell you more than that without specifics, so feel free to send me a pm if you have some concrete questions.
