I just thought I'd throw this out there for anybody looking to learn theory. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/for_beginners/learning_music_theory_the_beginning.html This article has been absolutely superb for me but it may be missed by many, with it being posted quite a while ago. Hope it helps :)

Hey guys, I was wondering what you guys do for practice and learning songs outside of rocksmith. I can read tab and such but obviously not all tabs are great and I find it very hard to play along with a song that I know would be incredibly easy in the game. For example, right now im trying to play My Hero by the Foo Fighters. Its mostly power cords and such, but for some reason I just can't get my timing down. Is there anything you guys recommend? Or do I just need to keep on attempting to play along with the song?

I am completely self taught. I have been playing Bass for about 4 or 5 months and I can play a great many songs to 80 or more percent. My problem is not knowing how to place my fingers correctly. I shy away from songs that require a great deal of finger placement. I find myself almost always using my index and middle finger. Then when I want to play some great blues songs with fantastic bass riff's, there is no way for me to keep up. Watching some of those great YouTube videos of people playing their bass's and seeing how smoothly their fingers move across the frets just cements the fact that I am definitely not doing it correctly. Help a brother out. Is there some wo…

Hello. Ive only played guitar (Lead with rocksmith) for 6months so im very new to this, but anyway ive been spending about 200 hours so far, and do master already alot of songs of avenged sevenfold, iron maiden, and some other bands. Anyway i love the guitar playing in Machinae Supremacy and ive been trying to figured out how to play the intro song of Sidstyler - machinae supremacy for about a week now, but I cant manage it. I know the speed is probably out of my skill level but I also think im doing something wrong. However I do manage to play the intro at about 80% speed without too many mistakes, but it sounds like im doing something terrible wrong when im picking th…

I was talking to a guy who used to teach guitar. He asked me what my goals were with learning guitar. I hadn't thought about it that way before, but I told him that I wanted to be able to play a song. He said that I should pick a song that I could play on an acoustic with standard tuning. If you're at somebody's house and they want you to play something, they will most likely have an acoustic. With electric guitars, you may not be able to achieve the right sound to play a song right. I like this idea. So I'm looking for a song that I could play on an acoustic with standard tuning. It's got to be fairly simple as I'm a noob. I'd like it to be something that eithe…

Many times I see the chord: ----- ----- --7-- ----- --5-- ------ However, I guess I am not one hundred percent sure how to play it. In rock smith, it only shows the yellow (5) and the orange (7) notes, and I strum the second, third, and forth strings. However Rocksmith doesn't show the third note, the blue one to strum. How do you play that chord? Some say mute the third string. I am not even sure how to do just that.

Hey, I’m still getting to grips with all this guitar playing, but if there’s one thing that frustrates me it’s my fingers in ability to stretch across frets and stay put! I’m struggling to play Bliz Bop with the 5/7 chord because my fingers keep retracting on themselves if that makes any sense? Are there any basic exercises I can do to help? I’ve seen a 3/5/7 chord in a Linkin Park song I want to learn and thought I may as well give up now if I can’t manage 5/7! Cheers Rob

I'm putting this here because, honestly, I have no idea what to do with this question. So, when you write a chord progression, you might substitute a major chord for its relative minor (a minor chord whose root is two notes below the substituted major chord) or, for that matter, a minor chord can be substituted with a major chord by reversing the process. But could you substitute either with a relative diminished chord one note below/above for major and minor respectively? It sounds like it could make sense, but of course you'd get a very peculiar sound.

I've been learning ever since RS2014 came out and I've been constantly practising, but I feel that I've kind of hit a wall so that I can't get much better without being able to alternate pick. I hold my pick correctly, but my upstrokes just always sound and feel off, and it doesn't sound good when I try to alternate pick (and I can only do it relatively slowly).Does anyone know any ways I could get better at this?

Wasn't too sure where to post these but here is as good a place as any. The first video here is a handy way to learn how to play your scales up and down the neck by combining the different boxes of each Pentatonic position to make one big box, or scale map: This second one is how to combine the Minor and Major Pentatonic Scales into one box shape for each position, and of course you can (and should!) combine this with the scale mapping idea above: Not too sure what you'd call the scale...Pentatonic Mijor perhaps..? Or maybe there's a proper name for it lol    Please feel free to add more to this thread that you've found useful. :…

Anyone have any tips on getting better at this? I find it really hard when playing stuff like Metallica when you have to alternate pick a palm-mute very fast then strike a non-muted chord and then back up to the mutes. Do you generally move you palm back or upwards off the strings to release mute?

I have had a guitar since 2008, a Samick explorer model, and been dabbling every so often since, and rekindled the flame with Rocksmith. I tend to hold the pick pinching between my thumb and my forefinger, sometimes being supported by the middle finger too while resting my hand on the bridge. My question is, is this ok to hold the pick for the blues-thrash metal genres that I'd like to cover, or do I need to hold the pick differently and basically re-teach myself on picking? (the way I hold it and how I rest my arm on the body/bridge is really comfortable)

A few years back I picked up a guitar magazine with an article by Steve Vai called "Freak Show Excess." It has several pages of intense excersizes covering all manner of guitar playing as well as training tips and insight from Vai himself. They cover a program that Vai believed would help make someone a much better player with practice of his key concepts. It might make an excellent base for a set of guitar training excersizes. I lack the skill and fluidity to play them myself, but if anyone would like them to start a project of their own, I can provide you with them. -k
