150. Who would guess? Championship is an integral part of custom community. To test your skill but also to introduce to new music you wouldn't listen to before. Here I found about Metric and fell in love with them (yeah, Emily, who cares about those other guys :lol: ). It's great to see, after all this weeks, those old faces, some were here even before me, but also new participant after new participant joining. It's because of you we're here. Without you the Championship wouldn't exist (who am I cheating? I would do it even if only to myself :P ). If you have any ideas, issues, go ahead and share with us. Throughout all this weeks Championship changed quite a bit, and it can change even further, but always for the better.

Just Pastor of Muppets for me today. Hand is still a tad painful. I did try Deep Purple and red X'd the shit out of it. Think I need more time in LAS for Time Warp... couldn't quite grasp it in SA and gave up halfway through because I got bored of feeling tired and uncomfortable while playing it. Pistols doesn't work for me (as much as I like them I kinda don't care atm. If I feel a bit better I might try fixing it and trying it) rocksmith crashed as I was about to try Iron Man so I just switched it off... defeated by overall crappiness.

Wow, it's been forever since #2. I think we're overdue for...

 

Gamut Wisdoms #3: Be Energy Efficient

 

"Stay loose." I'm always saying that, at the end of each Gamut Wisdoms. Why? Because I think it is a very key piece of wisdom!

 

When I started playing the drums, there was a distinctly rigid feel to my playstyle. Check out this video of Kid Gamut playing drums, when he was less wise:

 

 

Look at my stance. I am not relaxed. I am tense all over, pushing each note out of me. I'm putting more work into playing that beat than I have to. And it comes out in the playing, kind of! I always felt like it was punk music - it was supposed to feel like that.

 

When you start out playing drums, guitar, or any other instrument really, there is a common expectation that it is much harder than it 

actually is. You may even imagine that it's supposed to feel like it's a struggle, that it takes a lot of energy to create the music. But in 

actuality, if you're careful about your movements, you can drastically decrease how much work your fingers have to do to create the 

same sounds. Being relaxed and energy efficient can increase your stamina, and improve your tone.

 

That's kind of vague, though... What kinds of things like this can you do on guitar for better scores and better sounds?

 

- Don't slam your fingers into the frets. It takes a surprisingly small amount of energy to fret. Try resting your finger against a string without using any energy. Start playing notes on that string, and they will come out as muted plucks. Ever so slowly, while still playing, start applying pressure to the string. How much push did it take before it changed from muted plucks to the note ringing? Less than you thought, I wager!

 

- When moving your fingers, don't take your fingers too high off the frets. Every bit of distance you lift your fingers when moving them is distance you have to travel back down again. This is kind of the inverse of the last idea - Just as you should not fret harder than you have to, you should not UNfret harder than you have to!

 

- When dealing with a riff that looks complex, it's often worth a minute to pause it and look at it, and see if you're moving your fingers needlessly. Often, there'll be a time in the riff you're picking up your index... but upon review, if you bar the string below it, you can keep your index still throughout. That's a lot of energy saved that can be put elsewhere!

Figured out the chorus on this play and did an admirable job at pretending I can play the solo.

 

@@NoonyDeloony Rest that hand and get strong again! I had some RSI like symptoms for a while - I spend a lot of time playing guitar, typing, and gaming, and it was starting to cause some pain in my arms. But after a few months of them getting worse I started doing hand/finger stretches daily and my problems have thankfully vanished.

@@Gamut "Stay loose." Thanks dude, I jumped almost 2 points on master of puppets! Turns out i was putting too much pressure! Now i force myself to not do that and it really does sound better

some of you may notice that there is no INT Bass submitted as yet and i can confirm that i have played the Iron Man song (more than once) but as yet i have not managed to get through without the orange bars showing or the dreaded XXX's

 

no excuses like it was my Granddaughters first birthday (it was though) or i was too busy (although i real was) or i burnt my thumb on a hot weld (did that too)
