Project to gather, organize and standardize, and improve exercise customs

 

Rules recommended

1. Arrangement is in "Lead", and bonus/alternate arrangements

 

2. Tuning is E-Standard (except for special situations, like 5string Bass)

 

3. Record page (submitted cDLC) : Artist name "You", Album name "Exercises" (beware of typos)

Ignition search "Exercises" order on Artist - should give a most complete list.

 

4. Exercises should list together in RS14, sorted by Artist 

"You" display under "Y",  not overloaded letter.

"You Bass" for Bass only Exercises
"You Artist" for Exercises by Artists
"You Riff" for practical Exercises

 

5. Filenames (no space), "YouBass, YouArtist,YouRiff" ....psarc

followed  main topic exercised, sub-topics (style, root notes), origin, charter.

 

For easy updates, save all exercises in a subdir of DLC (DLC\Exercises)

 

I renamed customs (original name and charter is part of the new name)

Download by clicking on "You": (not this  :lol:)

Further suggestions :

Aim is quality in form and content in the making of exercises. 

• guitar mp3 track only if useful (to rhythm or melody)
   (no guitar track allows more arrangements in different keys, tunings, root notes
• drum/beat track is alive, better then dead boring metronome
• metronome bonus arrangement added by checking Metronome in Toolkit/arrangement window
• notes must be on beats!
• no empty last sector
• lyrics (long duration) for each sector to recall the topic exercised, player's focus
• divide exercises in logical sectors, optimize fret hand positions
• constant increase in difficulty ( not jumping from easy to hard back to easy)
• don't overload a custom with different topics, tabs or riffs, 4-5 minutes duration optimal
• use clean tone (except if Metal...)

for your bonus track, I suggest you copy any notes, and ghost them all, this should fool "EOF" :lol:

The "You Artist" has the only purpose of gathering exercises by known (and less known) artists, but some users may want them listed by the name, to find them. I usually don't start RS with a precise cDLC or artist in mind, and I forget them. 

 

It's up to you, you can use the real name.  Later, I list it under "You Artist", for players used to select "You" for exercises.

Theoretically, yes. But I have no mac to test, or to understand what could go wrong.

If anything doesn't work right, ask the charter who made it.

In general, I agree that this can be useful in some instances (i.e. for displaying chord progressions over which to solo or play bass), but I actually prefer providing sheet music with the exercises where everything is marked appropriately and has all the extra info not displayed in RS. This isn't only easier to read and understand but can be used for practice outside of RS as well.

I recommended "lyrics (long duration) for each sector to recall the topic exercised, player's focus"

I also tried to insert played notes in lyrics to learn the fretboard, which works fine once a slight sync problem resolved.

(check my melodic sequences)

This would be possible for strum patterns, but lyrics don't support special characters like arrows up/down.

I really would like to see more strum patterns this way, I have some in planning to do someday, because I'm really quite bad at it. 

But currently my job takes all my time.

Problem maybe that most of us may not have the required teaching level to make a great lesson.

Now this is said to prove me wrong  ^_^

Regarding strum pattern notation: a simple U for up and D for down suffices and is very common. The sync problem might be the bigger issue.

Strum patterns for short riffs or chord progressions might still be easier to figure out from sheet music though (as are many other things), so I would prioritize the provision of sheet music with every RS exercise, which still isn't all that common.

Yeah, that works too but one has to know how the actual score markings look to understand them. Maybe a less intuitive but still relevant alternative.
