Drop pedal with Rocksmith questions/info

Ive seen a drop pedal mentioned on one of the cdlc. how does it work, can i connect to laptop or do i go through amp. after a few years im back learning again and only really know the basics ie plug in guitar and load up rocksmith. any info would be helpful, thanks.
