Yeah, likely velcro.  Or, if you do what I do, I use those 3M magic strips or whatever they're called.  It leaves no sticky residue on either the guitar or the phone, and holds the weight perfectly.

I love my iRig HD for when I'm travelling and don't want to bring an amp.  I can use my computer and Guitar Rig 5 and still get great sound.

Shoot.  Was looking for something a little more stable to protect my iPhone.  The closest I've seen for a passable alternative is the sonic clamp.

I looked into the Sonic Clamp as well.  Didn't like how it looks on the guitar though.  Not quite punk enough DIY enough for me.   It's also $70 + shipping.  And for those of us in Canada, you have to add duty on top as well.

Yeah, I'm starting not to like the Sonic Clamp either.  I kinda dig the look, but I can't seem to find an app that serves as a tone switcher.  Really all I want to do is to easily switch between a clean tone and distortion tone during a song.

Amplitude might be what you're looking for.  It's the app that I use with the iRig HD.  I think it was $15, but I'm pretty sure there's a free version that you can try out.   It has a bunch of amp models, and pedal effects.  You can set up to 3 effects at a time with the iPhone version, and I think 5 with the iPad version.  And just like RS, you can fiddle around with mic placement on the cabinet to further refine your tone.

They have an Amplitube Fender version as well.
