Nuanced Tone Design Approaches

Just wondering if anyone would like to share tips for how they approach tone design for a broad audience. There are so many different factors to consider that shape how a tone sounds between different guitars and players  - pickups, selector position, tone knobs, where the player is playing in relation to the pickups, etc... 

Do you have a method for designing tones which aims to provide a good tone across all variations?
