I was talking to a guy who used to teach guitar.  He asked me what my goals were with learning guitar.  I hadn't thought about it that way before, but I told him that I wanted to be able to play a song.  He said that I should pick a song that I could play on an acoustic with standard tuning.  If you're at somebody's house and they want you to play something, they will most likely have an acoustic.  With electric guitars, you may not be able to achieve the right sound to play a song right.  I like this idea.

 

So I'm looking for a song that I could play on an acoustic with standard tuning.  It's got to be fairly simple as I'm a noob.  I'd like it to be something that either sounds really nice.  Something like this:

Or something that everybody would recognize, like a classic rock song.

 

I'd also like it to be in Rocksmith, as that makes learning it more fun.

I'd say High and Dry by Radiohead would fit pretty well. It's pretty easy song to learn and it's on standard E tuning. It's originally played with electric guitar, but it works really well with acoustic too IMO. It's in Standard E tuning as well. Knockin' on Heavens Door starting with the Rhythm part to know the chords is fairly easy and well known.

Californication is not that hard and pretty interesting to play too and you need an electric only during the solo.

Zombies from the Cramberries is really easy too and play really well on an acoustic.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Even though I've never cared much for Bob Dylan, Knockin' on Heaven's Door looks like it will be a great song for what I'm looking for.  It's easy, and it uses chords I already know and am mostly familiar with (though I never did learn D properly).  I'm going to start with that

I guess you could learn nothing else matters, thought it does require some finger work with the right hand (if you normally pick with your right) You can learn it if you just practice enough. And it is a fairly recognizable song.

I've never heard that song before, but it does sound learnable.

Kinda off the Acoustic part, but for anything regarding learning finger placement, I would recommend Sympathy by Rare Bird in the cdlc library. Simple and nicely paced.

I would say good riddance time of your life by green day, very easy acoustics song , or wonderwall by oasis the first 2 acoustic tracks I learnt when starting out

It's basically 4 main chords, but they are 99% played as arpeggios (pick 1, pick 2 - strum rest). once you have the pattern sorted in your head, it's actually a fairly easy song.

Most of the lessons were posted a few years aback - but I frequently find myself going back to them when I feel it's time to brush up on the acoustic jams.

eg 

My mate churns out a good rendition of "What's going on?" by 4 Non Blondes. Nearly everyone know's that song and it's like 3 chords. I used to play "Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M and that was pretty simple too... if you go for a catchy tune with a chorus everyone can join in you'll be loved at any party... or hated, depending how awful the chorus accompaniment of 'X' amount of drunk people, sing :) 

You will probably want to pick out a song that has distinct riff that everyone knows.  Or have a decent signing voice.  Bowie's Rebel Rebel is a quick easy song to learn (D, E, A, Bm) with the same strum pattern through most of the song.  If I play it, most people won't recognize the song with my (not so good) singing to go with it.

Well, I started playing the guitar in January and the Rocksmith 2014's easier song is, in my opinion, Next Girl (The Black Keys). Another easy one is Blitzkrieg Bop (The Ramones) or Breaking the Law (Judas Priest).

And everybody knows Smoke on the water (Deep Purple), but I am not able to play the solo, thogh the riff is so simple.

@up: Very easy is also Sabaton's "Ghost Division", most of Joy Division's songs... Rhythm from Metallica's "Enter Sandman"

Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers" (except solo)... "Don't bring me down" by Electric Light Orchestra...

 

Many, many songs - just name genre :)

Holiday Road by Lindsey Buckingham is extremely simple, short(2:20 seconds), and damn fun to play as well on either acoustic or electric. Knocking on Heavens door though a great tune is a bit much for a total new guitarist. Creep by Radiohead would be better really. The Beatles, Paperback Writer is great for learning a couple chords and its just that as well(2 chord song) Good Luck and practice an hour a day everyday.

You could always play Cemetary gates by Pantera its fun on Accoustic and E Standard Tuning.

Hurt from Johny Cah. Very simple...albeit not exactly party song..more like to impress chick.
