Does anyone know how songs show you the strumming pattern that you need to do, right now i learning "knocking on heavens door" and i was just strumming down down down down down, but apparently  the right way was "down with a pause down down up".

So my question really is, where does it show what strumming pattern do i need to do, does it even show it in game or is that something i need to look on my own?

Rocksmith shows repeat chords as a solid white bar. So it'll show you the first chord in the normal colour coded way, and if the chord is repeated or strummed it will then show the following strums as those white bars. It will repeat the chord pattern in the normal colour coded way every barr or subsequent chord change.

So it's a matter of what feels right and what you can keep up with more than anything.

You can sometimes hear the difference in the audio (do nothing but downstrokes on e.g. a palm muted Em chord and then switch to alternate picking to hear an example), but i'm not aware of any visual indicator on Rocksmith 2014, nor any practicable difference in the registration as long as it's all ringing out at the right time.

 

I have the impression you can maybe theoretically use a reverse Arpeggio notation (it'd look like a rapidly cascading series of notes in the chord mashed together from high string to low string), but that seems like a lot of work.

Technically it doesn't really matter as long as you are playing the chords at the correct tempo. Some guitarists it's quite straightforward ie. James Hetfield  is all about downstrokes, but generally it's all about what feels comfortable to you as a musician.

almost all guitar teachers will tell you to keep your strumming hand in motion (down up down up) even when the strum pattern calls for  down down up or something of that nature.  Never pause.

if the pattern is down pause down up.   you strum would strum like this

down , up (lifted slightly so you don't touch the strings) , down, up. etc..

 

in knocking on heavens door... the Cmaj with your pinky on 3rd fret of high e (which is a g note) is up strummed by dylan.

do you have to play it that way, no. music like art is subjective.
