I'm trying to do a research for my school work on multimedia hardware. My idea was I would learn how the Real Tone cable works and how Rocksmith recognizes which note is played on the guitar.

 

However, I did find out that these informations are quite hard to find. So I am asking you guys, could you please share any info you know about this topic with me? From what I've learned so far is that the Real Tone cable is similar to a USB sound card - I'm guessing there definitely must be an A/D converter. Also for the note recognition, Rocksmith must be using some kind of Fourier transform?

The RTC is a simple ADC. Note that it likely integrate other component to adapt the impedance and maybe adapt a bit the voltage reaching the ADC and other little stuff that can be useful to get a proper signal into the ADC and of course all the component needed to communicate via USB. I don't think anyone tried to open up a RTC to actually look at what is inside but it's the best solution to actually get proper insight on what is used.

 

As how the recognition inside RS works, only guesses can be done here and it's likely to revolve around Fourier transformation but it would require to actually have access to the code behind the game to know how it actually works...
