Thanks, guys.  Obviously, I also thought it looked gorgeous - that's why I bought it.

 

On closer inspection though… lol… I'll get to that in a mo'.

 

It was an Ebay purchase, I paid £145 for it, plus £15 postage.  It was reduced from £275 because it needed a set-up, hell of a reduction for a set up, I thought, and couldn't resist, even though I was thinking it's a bit like buying a car without an MOT (or a non-runner for non-UK readers), so I was a little on edge.

 

It's a CSL (Charles Summerfield Ltd), or essentially a re-branded Ibanez from the FujiGen Gakki factory, Japan, early 70's I believe - as it's stamped "Made in Japan" but has no serial No (early ones didn't). :D

 

I was a little upset when it arrived, as I didn't expect the fretboard to be lacquered, and lacquered so thickly, as well.  I didn't know maple boards usually are… my initial reaction was to suspect the fingerboard had been replaced because there is very little fret wear.  Also the neck profile was not as I thought it would be - it's a lot thicker than I expected.  I though jazz basses were supposed to have thin necks?  This then meant I thought the neck had been replaced instead...

 

I also found two fine diagonal cracks in the body of the bass where the neck joins it :(.  Later I found another fine split in the headstock, unsurprisingly running through a couple of the tuners...

 

However, today (as I've been off work ill) I've managed to do quite a bit of reading to set my mind at rest, the "cracks" I've noticed really are bugger all, and I've even managed to set it up to a reasonable standard.  The truss rod works just fine, as do all the screws at the bridge saddles, bar one.

 

The sound is really nice as well, from from the one working pickup…  :lol: - I guess now, I'm not going to be feeling guilty about upgrading an original?

 

So what pickups shall I get for it and where can I buy small Japanese screws from? :D
