If this is the wrong area  let me know where it should go.   This is kind of a theory/community direction question.

 

I am working on some songs in B standard.   The band plays seven string guitars.   Normally the 7 string guitar is tuned BEADGBE.    Since rocksmith only supports 6, when I make CDLC I drop the high E.

 

Doing research online when a 6 string is tuned to B standard , it is usually tuned BEADF#B.   This makes it so all the normal scales and patterns work.   If you capo a guitar in this tuning at the 5 fret you get EADGBE.    If you capo a normal EADGBE guitar at the 7 fret you get BEADF#B.

 

Now for the question... I can't decide which of the 2 tunings I should use.   BEADGB (drop high E) or Baritone 6 string tuning BEADF#B.    Most of mine are BEADF#B but I have found other B Standard songs in BEADGB.   

 

I was just looking for some community input.

Depend on the resulting transcription in both tuning to be honest...

 

I tend to transcribe 7 string B std in 6 string E std or Drop D (you can look at most of the Eric Calderone to see the result) mostly because the lowest string isn't used that much or i put everything an octave higher when i really need to which is then easier to play for everyone.

 

The ending tuning is really up to you and without knowing the 7 string tab it's hard to make any decision on the better ending tuning.

9 times out of 10 unless there is a solo there will be very little use out of the F#/G string.    For the times when there is no solo, a C chord will be 3-5-6 instead of 3-5-5.    Just a slighlty different shape to play, if I don't want to transpose it to 8-10-10

It really depends on the original tab, some will badly translate into a E std for 6 string, some other will work like a charm, that's all i'm saying.

 

And it's not only about shape, it's also about position on the fret board and where do you stand compare to what you're used to play on a 6 strings. I know i have a real hard time playing some song in the 7 string B standard tuning on a 6 because i can throw out all my usual cue about where do i stand on my fretboard and all the standard scale shape i know on my 6 strings.

 

Transposition isn't something to treat lightly even if 6 and 7 string guitar seems like similar instrument they aren't that much.

I find most of the stuff has more low B than High E in them.   I have a 7 string, and most of the B standard stuff I make so I can learn, but I want to share.   So for people who have a guitar in B Standard...  My question is really not drop high string, or drop low string.   But if I choose to drop high string, do I tune the G to F# or leave it as a G.

Then my question is : do you want to write your custom for a 7 string or for a 6 string guitar player?

 

If you think that people that will download your custom are more likely to be 7 string guitarist then go for the G, if they are more likely to be 6 string guitarist then go for the F# to keep it in the same standard tuning possible.

 

One thing that you could do if you really can't decide is do both so that every kind of player can choose the "best" part for them.

Do we have any idea which is more prevalent?    People who have a 7 or tune a 6 to B?

 

There probably isn't a good answer.    All the B standard stuff I have download from other people uses F#.   Except for one song.   It sounds silly, but I tend to skip playing that song so I don't have to tune one string :)
