Exercise: Blues Comping 1 in A major shuffle

Don't be scared by that name. We decided to use @ as much as we can, so we're starting an exercise. It won't be a weekly challange and there won't be a winner. But it will be there so you can post scores and see your and others progression. Exercise won't fade away, so you'll be able to post scores as long as we'll be around. Here is the new Exercise Leaderboard. Have fun with that little activity!

Ok, sorry to be a moaner but... is anyone having trouble getting the mid section of Two doors to register the notes? I see Motive's managed to 100% this but for some reason even when I rif repeat that midsection the notes seem to miss every time. If you look at the third orange block of Rodman's score post where he's levelled down that's where I seem to get a ton of misses from there to about 3 blocks along and in SA it's exactly the same which is sucking giant donkey balls.

I honestly don't think it's me, my rhythm and speed for this is really good on this track (Toots own horn) it's just that flippin' middle bit  causing me grief :(.

Ugly is the only word I can use to describe it, but I finally managed to get a score attack run without any strikes.  I did end with a x5 multiplier though...

http://i.imgur.com/lnA0rPm.jpg

And it turns out, in a full play through, the G-Bb-G-Bb-etc section is actually causing the most trouble.  It's easily the simplest part of the song, but my hand feels like a clump of wet noodles after getting through it for some reason.  So I end up botching everything that comes after pretty badly.

On the plus side, the main groove from the start feels pretty manageable at full speed now.  Still a lot of misses though, mostly on the shifting and when transitioning between some sections.  The GFDGFD riff is actually giving me some trouble too, now that I've got it up to full speed.  Might need to resort to pulling off to the F after all, or maybe hammering on the D.  I'll have to see what feels better.

I'll be shooting for the 90s by the end of the week, but still a lot of work to go.  It's not feeling completely insurmountable anymore at least :)

Two Doors: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=534291422Canne play this in SA this was about the best run I could do with the registering note issue :(

Rip it up: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=534215957Could have done better but this was this'avo's run, not done a play on this tonight... and that's it for the noo :(

My updates for the day.

MC Bass:

http://i.imgur.com/sWxymFk.jpg

Progress is frustratingly slower than I'd have expected. Part of this is probably that I was wearing my forearm out practicing a really technical riff on my own time and so I get a bit tired and/or sloppy when playing this at times. Getting a lot of "random" misses on the main riff in particular, so I'll probably slow that down a bit and make sure I'm playing it cleanly.

Int Lead:

http://i.imgur.com/ps8AqvZ.jpgBoom!

I agree there might be some small charting errors on this one. A few notes in the high bit (just after the B?) sound a bit dissonant when I play the notes charted. There are also one or two small errors on the notes in the intro, I think (there's one chord where it has the B string open, another couple things looked weird, like a chord change came in too early for one chord then reverted for another chord before changing for real). Other than that, great tones and syncing and everything from what I could tell.

Advanced Lead (Embedded the image rather than just posting a link because it's my class now, I guess? At least pending words from @@Mortalo):

http://i.imgur.com/tkcitl8.jpgNot entirely sure about the difficulty relative to Cholly (though my score right now is almost identical to my final Cholly score!), but I agree that this is probably on the easier side of Advanced. Don't have too much of a problem with picking patterns now outside of the descending riff that's played a couple of times (in the middle and at the very end). The riffs with the chords and the DGF riff are not too bad on guitar.

Anyway, I think there might be some places where the guitar is charted wrong, at least compared to the bass. The guitar riff starts C#D, while the bass riff starts CD. There are also some places later on where the guitar plays an F rather than the usual A#. I don't trust my ear well enough to say these are wrong, but they struck me as odd.

@@Bentron - as I somewhat alluded to above, this song wreaks havoc on my fretting forearm. Definitely by that point in the song it wants a rest, and it almost looks like there is one, but I have to stretch a bit for that one (or use my pinky, which is also tiring). Might try switching between 1-3 and 3-6 position or something and seeing if that helps. Or maybe even try to just reposition my whole hand each time to spare my forearm a bit.

Also, for the main riff, you could play it without shifting, by playing the A# on the A string rather than on the D. Not sure if it's a better way to play it, but you might find it easier.

@@NoonyDeloony - I only played through the song once on bass, but the only note I missed was when I accidentally played the wrong string. So I can't say I noticed anything with note recognition.

How very annoying, :( the same section is played at the beginning too and there is no problem with that, maybe it's a connection issue or latency when I record... Oh well, will try again tomorrow in SA and see if it occurs again. Just seems odd it's always that section on the d and g strings :(

I hadn't thought of that.  Either option may help a lot with the fatigue.  I'll have to give it a try tomorrow.

Also, for the main riff, you could play it without shifting, by playing the A# on the A string rather than on the D. Not sure if it's a better way to play it, but you might find it easier.

That one I did try earlier today actually, but it didn't feel significantly better/easier.  The riff as written is good practice for accurate and consistent shifting anyway, which I do need to work on, especially in that part of the neck.

(Embedded the image rather than just posting a link because it's my class now, I guess? At least pending words from @@Mortalo):

You 99.64ed Lead chart on What You Know?!?! Yeah dude, get your ass out of Intermediate and into Advanced, you belong here and we need members.

Wait... did you capo?!

To be honest, I think even if you can play all the melodic bits that well in What You Know you deserve to class up, but I'm interested to see what you can manage without just as a point of interest. I have a capo but even after finding out it's an easier song with a capo I still play it without.

@@Gamut - Yeah, this was with the capo. Even with it, after I got used to the chords and stuff my first few playthroughs were in the 97s, then I had this big breakthrough! Took some care to nail the slides, but I guess the previous run-throughs helped drill that into my head and remember exactly where the 17th fret is in relation to the 11th.

The capo definitely helps with some things beyond the awkward chords I noted earlier. A few of the chords in the intro I also find tricky without it (part of it is probably that I still have major trouble reading most chords that lie across 4 frets. They're also not in the chord book, which means I should probably just extract the tab to get the fingerings down). The transition down to the chords in verse is also made a little easier with the capo.

If I had to guess, a similar level run without the capo probably would have ended up closer to 98%. Definitely would have been a few more misses in the intro (at least without properly practicing the chords), then one or two extra in each verse.

Aw fanks very much @@Mortalo. I did have a weird moment yesterday that happened while I was playing this song. I felt like I was almost asleep in that R.E.M. part of sleep that makes you suddenly drop and wakes you up, I was thinking "fuckie 'ell, my little finger is working a treat, I'll do a roast tomorrow and wake the baby up in 20 minutes"... Then I woke up and fucked up loads. But, it was great, I felt really euphoric knowing my fingers were learning where to go now. I imagine if folk learn an instrument at an early age they won't get that feeling, or at least forgotten it but it felt good :) I love our little gang. It's boss!

Have to say I was enjoying the music too much to pay attention to whether I had the chords in Pool charted 100% right, though  :P

Well, I don't get the point of it. Excercises like these are a bit worthless with Rocksmith, because you have to look at the screen to know the notes.

the point is to memorize this one riff and play it through the whole 12 bar form. That's why there are no variations inside. You have it if you are able to play it in Master Mode.

Those exercises are also perfect to learn playing without watching the screen, a big weak point of RS. Here you get the chance to get rid of it a bit. :)
