Rocksmith 2014 Championship Week 111

Besides it's not that bad.

True, but it's Metallica. It's not that hard to find people doing it right. Even if the charter doesn't know exactly what to do, someone should be able to lend them help with it.

The big problem is that shit tabs can get ridiculous numbers of 5 star votes on UG (see, for example, most Rolling Stones tabs, Graveyard tabs, and so on). It's a natural assumption for charters to make that a chart having a 5 star rating after 48 votes (or even 10 or 5) will be pretty damned accurate (especially for guitar), but this song and some of the other bands I've mentioned make it clear that this isn't even close to true.

Another problem is that hardly anyone ever gives useful feedback on here (I've been lucky enough to have several people offer good feedback, or even fix up the tabs or vocals on their own, but it's pretty rare), which is shown here in that a song that's been out for over a year with over 3k downloads hasn't had any comments about the tab. Not even a question about why there are fret hand mutes on the power chords, or why sometimes a chord is played one way, but other times another. I may pay more attention to these types of things than most people since I'm a charter, but this is stuff that I noticed on my first playthrough on guitar.

And, OK, I'm being kind of hypocritical in having posted my complaints here rather than in the record thread, but whatever. I'll try to do better in the future.

@@albatross213 Most (almost everyone?) people are not giving meaningful (at all) tab feedback because WE're shitty guitarists with lack of ears. WE can't do it. You need to accept that as that won't change

@@Mortalo - That's true that most people don't have well developed ears or guitar skills, but all that it takes to bring the possibility that something is off to the charter's attention is being observant (kind of a necessity if you're trying to learn a song) and curious ("why is this chord played that way here but that other way there?" or "why is the chord in this riff played with an extra note this time through? Does it actually sound different in the recording?" which can then lead to "What does the band play live? What do people play in guitar covers?"). It certainly doesn't take ears, because I have proven that mine are non-functional (and that's only one instance). And it doesn't necessarily take much skill, though perhaps those with less skill will be more likely to think the problem is with them and grow frustrated.

Anyway, I made a version with some modifications. As with Countdown to Extinction, all chord techniques didn't import, so I had to restore most muting and sliding manually. I also increased the scroll speed to 1.4 (for both lead and rhythm) to space out the chords a bit. Some things might still be off, but it plays much nicer than the previous version. If people have feedback, let me know and I should be able to make changes reasonably quickly now that I have source files of my own. At the end of the week, I can send the resulting file (and source stuff) to @@bernixix.

Edit: Fixed some stuff that I still hadn't fixed on lead. Also changed the sectioning a bit.

Here are my results with it:

Was quite sloppy on the intro clean riff for some reason (but not the same riff elsewhere in the song), but pretty good otherwise. The fast chord riffs will take some practice to nail down.

Metallica bass

Won't be able to do MC bass this week because of the low tuning, so I'm going back to last weeks song that I didn't get a chance to play.

Some more Harvester of Sorrow. Looks like I still have some edits to do with regard to palm mutes and stuff. Anything else people notice with the current version

Rhythm:

http://i.imgur.com/uDmIAG4.jpgI was actually expecting this to be a lot better given how it felt. Must not have done too well on the chorus.

Lead:

http://i.imgur.com/Q8AG37s.jpgBy the end of this I was starting to get the chorus riff down. Started stringing at least a couple repeats together with no misses pretty consistently. Solo isn't too bad as far as Metallica solos go. I'd say this is harder than the rhythm mostly because it has more of the chorus and less of the clean guitar riff (and thus less "filler"). And of course the solo leads to a few more missed notes than the corresponding stuff on rhythm.

"Shitty" guitarist can be happy, bcs of can to play many of cdlc and have fun. More good guitarist can not, bcs of very annoying wrong (or missed) notes, bad positions, bad beatmap, bad tones, not such a great choice of cdlc for enjoy.

@ spot on.

@@albatross213 Notice where you are right now. You've made a big leap, becoming quite good on guitar in short time. Why? Your dedication to pursue knowledge and skill. Though that's rarity, as most of us just want to have fun, and as Motive noted, being ignorant ( ) helps.

Sync issues are not that hard to spot, so sticking to trusted charters helps :)

Intermediate Lead - 97%, 69 streak

Fun and not that hard.

Beginner Lead http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=571059944#_=_

Made a bit of progress accuracy wise and beat my high score for hard mode.

Intermediate Lead http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=571061570#_=_

Gave it another run through and will spend some time in riff repeater either tonight or tomorrow. Doesn't look too bad if I can memorize a good chunk of it.

Another update to Harvester of Sorrow (earlier links should go to the same file, still). Added a few missing PMs, and chord names to some chords that had lost them.

@@fiddlesticks - An idea: except for one line where it goes onto the blue string, almost all of Locust stays on red and yellow. Therefore, if you take your bass and do emulated bass, you can tune your D and G strings an octave above the red and yellow (which I think you should be able to manage), then fret notes to get past the other strings. Then play the song on those strings! It will be weird emulating bass on your bass, but...

@@Nacholede - I saw them a couple of times when I was in high school (I think Vapor Trails tour and R30 tour). Great shows and it's a shame they won't be touring anymore, though I wouldn't take this as confirmation of no more shows ever until we hear it from Rush themselves.

@ - Yeah, pretty much anything that makes me feel like I have to appease the game rather than sound like the song makes me frustrated. It's OK when it comes to playing songs for fun, but when it comes to competition like this it seems silly to have to deliberately misplay things to get a higher score.

@ - You mean you played both guitar parts for that bit simultaneously? It's definitely possible, but it seems more likely it would be done as a harmony since they have two guitarists.

First scores poorly played by a poorly Noony :(

Beg Danzig, She rides: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=571142848

Int Chris Isaak, Wicked Game: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=571142805

Adv metallica, Harvester of Sorrow: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=571142749 not keen on this song but hopefully I can 100% it. Seems pretty straight forward.

MC Machine Head, Locust: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=571142645 (My bass hates the low tuning of this but I kinda like the song so I'll try it on t'other bass, if that likes it I'll put an effort into it.)

Da Capo: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=571142701 I vaguely remember playing the first opening bars of this song when we last had it in the champs and putting it in the drawer where I keep "tracks I mustn't try as I suck at the moment"... I still suck at it but at least I got through it. I'll work on it as it's fun and I need to sort out my plucking technique and this seems like just the track to try that with. :)

@@fiddlesticks - Glad it worked. I guess I forgot about the "octave" parts around the second chorus (sorry!). How'd you manage those? I guess move the low stuff to a lower string and play correspondingly far up the fretboard? You'd have time to move in both cases (open notes for one, long sustain for the other), but that must have been a bit tricky.

Anyway, I retuned. Then I had some problems with note detection on my (usually) E string, so I ended up playing all of the riffs but the fast tritone one on my B string.

Think you can get me on points this time?
