This topic is both for testing and discussing collaboration on both Parts of "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield. I have now finished transcribing (the bass) and syncing "Part 1" and will try to get a test version done soon. Maybe some of you can work together and transcribe different parts of the track. I can also try my hand on some of the easier guitar sections. You'll definitely need some patience to work on this because time signatures are constantly shifting, different rhythm and melody patterns are overlapping and even though there's quite a bit of repetition in the individual themes, none of the 14 themes is ever repeated. The longest sections is the last one, by far, because it's slowly building and introducing different instruments that play the melody. There's a rhythmic pattern in that sections that kind of sounds like it also has bass but I'm not really sure; it might just be a guitar recorded at double speed or put through some effect. I opted for the easier bass line but I could transcribe that pattern as well and make a bonus arrangement, though the pattern fades out with time and it might sound strange to keep playing it and awkward to suddenly change it, so I don't know. I'll work on "Part 2" as soon as I'm happy with this one and it's ready for release. Help on "Part 2" would be great as well.

http://www.allgigs.co.uk/images/object/artist/72071/Iron_Butterfly-1-200-200-100-crop.gif Time for another project, that I can sporadically work on whenever I feel the need. :) Iron Butterfly has been one of my favorite bands ever since I got into music from the 60s and 70s. As famous as they are for "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", most people don't even know anything else about them. So, I think it's fair to say, that they are still extremely underrated because the songwriting and musicianship was a lot stronger than they are usually given credit for. The songs may be short and simplistic for the most part but there's not a single one on their first four albums (let's just disregard their two mid 70's busts) that I don't care for. Especially the tunes on "Ball" are catchy as hell and really every song has a bass line that adds movement and excitement to the track in a way that it seldom does in other bands. I would say Organ and Bass were most definitely the central elements of almost every song. The guitar always stays back, has a lot of reverb and isn't up front in the mix like the bass, so you can always make out those amazing lines by Jerry Penrod, who left after "Heavy", and then Lee Dorman. Both were amazing bass players and had a very similar style, so for a long time I always thought it was the same guy playing on all the albums, when in fact every member apart from band leader Doug Ingle left before they recorded their second album. The big question remains, if I like them so much, why have I never even tried to make a custom of one of their tracks before? Well, when I started out making customs, I couldn't transcribe yet and their weren't any good tabs around (and there still aren't), so I had no choice to move on to other stuff. After I got the hang of transcribing bass parts, I was still hung up on always trying to deliver full packages that include arrangements for all instruments, so I put it on hold until I would be able to transcribe the guitar parts as well. I've improved a lot since then but, tbh, I still have trouble with guitar parts and I'm tired of waiting, so I figured: fuck this shit, I'm just gonna make bass only customs because that's what I really was interested in from the start. I think no other band has inspired me more to become a bass player and even after learning so many different bass lines and styles, I still find the bass work on those IB tracks awe inspiring. They make me crab my bass every time I fire up a track wishing I could play along now but alas, I'm not that good. So, grunt work it is and because I couldn't decide on where to start or which songs to "customize", I just figured, I'd do them all and proceed chronologically. When I say, I'll do them all, I'm probably lying, but we'll have to see how far I can get. Obviously, I won't work on this continuously but I'll try to do at least one or two each month. I am starting out with bass transcriptions because I'm most comfortable with that but I plan on adding guitars and vocals at a later point. Hey guys, If you haven't figured it out by now, then let me tell you that I'm an avid music collector, always looking for great obscure records from earlier periods (especially the 60's and 70's) and also ones that are rather well known but escaped my keen senses for the longest time somehow. I love all that stuff because it lets me (re)discover the roots of my favorites genres and therefore broaden my musical horizon further and further. The reason for my post however is the fact, that I've long been keeping an extended playlist of all my favorites tracks from the 60's up to the 90's in my iTunes database, primarily including obscure tracks but also quite a few "deepish" cuts from better known bands of that time frame to spice things up, and that the time has now come to share it with you all. That's why I transferred my internal playlist to 8tracks, so that everyone could have access to it and get a taste of what music I listen to and enjoy on a daily basis. Along the way I hope you will too and maybe it'll change your perspective of something that you thought you already had a firm grasp on. Hi guys, I think it's about time that I open up another big project because… :huh: well just because I can. B) I really got into Blues lately, more so than usual, and I thought to myself: well, where's all the good stuff? There really should be more great Blues and Blues Rock in RS. So I went online looking for tabs and songbooks of artists that would fit the bill. Along the way I discovered some great new musicians and bands that I didn't even knew before, so that's certainly a plus but I also found a lot of great tabs that I can use to get some of the most epic Blues and Blues Rock songs into the game. As usual the bass is either missing or wrong but that's something I can easily fix, thankfully, but the guitar, at least in most of the song books, is tabbed very accurately and something I can rely on heavily, which I do in fact, because I am happy if I can play at least a third of those crazy licks and riffs. :cry: Well, anyway. Progressive Music Project: As any of you might have guessed from the list of customs I've release and the ones released by others that I showed interested in the most, I'm a big fan of progressive music of any kind and the fact that the progressive tag can be applied to almost every genre is what makes it so enticing. The monotony of straightforward radio friendly pop, rock and metal is often to much for me and that's when I turn to the "dark" side of music, where I can unwind in ever evolving musical stories of intricate complexion, not only told by thoughtful lyrics but made alive by the voices of the instruments. I especially like progressive rock from the 70's, but not only the classics, also the more obscure stuff that didn't reach the masses, even though it was sometimes as good, if not better, as a lot of the most popular acts, but that's personal opinion. The same goes for the definition of what's progressive as well, because not all bands can easily be classified as such, but I'll stick with whatever's defined as progressive on http://www.progarchives.com/. There's of course different kinds of musicals: there's the simple song structured ones like "The Book Of Mormon" or "Wicked" and there's also the more progressive ones which work like classic music theatre, i.e. "Les Misérables" or most of Steven Sondheim's musicals. I am a big fan of both formats and I want to bring a nice variety of bits and pieces of all of the famous musicals to RS, but I would also appreciate every effort from other charters in this direction.
