  1. Hi folks.  Its been a few years since I posted so most won't remember me.  Anyway, I received a report that one of the Yngwie Malmsteen links was down so I investigated.  I had used Mediafire to share the customs I did between 2014 and 2016 and now that site is apparently overrun with adware download links.  I want to move all of the CDLC files I had originally shared to some place that is NOT a wall of spam for programs nobody needs or wants.

I want to avoid using dropbox because I only have a corporate account with them and have to keep that separate.  So, any suggestions?

  2.

I was getting ready to try to figure out how to do this for mandolin (same tuning as violin), but it looks like someone has already invented this particular wheel. Can anybody point me toward a tutorial to set this up? I assume I'm just setting it to A440 x3?

    422

You double the core frequency then double it again. If the starting frequency is 440, cello would be 880 and violin is 1760. Don't emulate bass as you'll break strings while tuning.

I did make an overview video a couple years ago. Setup, charting and tuning offset is all in there.

  3. Well I've given you a hit.  If it's device based (not ip address based) I'll certainly throw you some more.

Nice one Daikano, you're always trying new things :D

The only thing the video is missing...  you on a cliff in that long coat and hat playing a big solo while on a helicopter sweep shot

LOL!  One of the guys I work with said I should have flown to Greenland or Norway and stood on an icy plain.  Alas, I don't have that kind of budget!

As for the contest, I think it is browser based rather than IP, and it resets every day or so.  Of the 800 or so legit entries, I am around #50 now.  The counter keeps going til June 9 so by all means help me out. :D

  4. Hey all,

I just finished uploading my entry for this contest.  I'd appreciate any views of the video on the site.

The way it works is simple.  Each view on the site (which has NO ads or banners) gives a point for the contest.  If you get enough points from views, follows, and shares, then the panel of judges may select your video for the finals.

The prize is a trip to L.A. to meet Zakk Wylde for a private masterclass with him at Guitar Center, along with a full setup of pedals, amp, and a new Wylde Audio Odin guitar.

    Thanks!

  5. I've fallen off of the custom creation scene for quite a while now.  Working on PCs all day for my job, I get home and don't even want to look at one, even to play RS.  I spend most of my free time watching TV, plinking on a guitar or my cello.
Today is the first day I've actually perused the forums in several months.  I'm glad that everyone is keeping Prog/Metal alive in the CDLC list.  I can't believe there were TWO Dream Theater customs released the same day as their new album, The Astonishing.  Kudos for the work on those!

  6. I created a custom of Shooting Star's Last Chance, and another of Golden Earring's Twilight Zone.   That's the only classic rock stuff I've charted.  Nearly everything else I've done has been neoclassical metal, I think.  I still greatly enjoy playing them, which is why I made them in the first place.

  7. Actually I just did a quick google search and found this video promo, which depicts exactly what I was trying to convey in text.
I'm not saying that exploration of the possibilities with the Rocksmith engine isn't worth-while.  I just don't think it is designed for an instrument like piano, like this one is.

  8. I haven't spent much time charting in the last 6 months.  I did finish Bach's cello concerto - Prelude and published it for Bass and guitar, but the primary bass part was actually made for cello.  It works perfectly by pitching up the chart to 882.5.

I'm working on Lindsey Stirling's Hallelujah for my wife, and should finish that within a week or so.

As for the idea of piano on RS...  I'm not sure its worth the effort.  There are other programs already out there for learning piano, that use a piano roll mechanism much like what you'd see in MIDI editors.  They just put the piano at the bottom and the roll comes down from the top of the screen just like Rocksmith.  I'm pretty sure that's where Ubisoft got the idea to make RS in the first place.  I've been using an interface similar to the one pictured below for MIDI editing since the late 90s.

  9. Assuming you are tuning a violin and not a guitar, be sure you have emulated bass turned OFF. The tuning interface has no way to designate violin vs cello so if the custom tuning shows GDAE 1760ish (low to high) then it is violin. If it it CGDA with core frequency around 881 it is cello.

  10. @@vinegarv I spent the last two hours working on this.  There were some oddities in the process because for some reason your notes.eof and xml file had the song in excess of 6 minutes long, and it wasn't synced to a beat map.  I hadn't come across that before.  Also, the version of the song I have is the extended version, and there are some differences so I couldn't use the actual data you sent me.  However, I did use the notation you used for most of the song by referencing your video.

Given I had already started transcribing the song a month ago, I went ahead and combined what I had and what you had.

One big difference between your transcription and mine, is that the chromatic walk-down starting on the D and ending on the B is on the cello.  Maybe I'm incorrect, but the timbre of the instrument sounds more like a cello than a violin, to me.

I'll have the song packaged up soon.

  11. If you can put the notes.eof file up on a share, and the tone file you used (which sounded great, btw) I can sync it up with the chart I've finished for Cello.  The timing on the song is quite erratic, so i think I spent more time synchronizing the beats than transcribing.

  12. Dude that is awesome!  I was actually considering making a violin and cello custom of Eleanor Rigby since I've dropped the violin (mostly) and moved to cello.  I'll definitely put the wife onto this custom!

Edit:  I had to try it out myself.  I missed the first note on the score attack run. :(

  13. Honestly, I haven't played the rhythm or bass parts of Surfing since the day I finished it.  If anyone has any feedback regarding Surfing with the Alien, such as incorrect notation, timing, or bend strength, please post in the thread where I listed it, and I'll review it.

I hope everyone enjoyed that custom as much as I do.

  14. If I ever make time for it, I will finish revising these other violin pieces.  I've got a few from Lindsey Stirling, and have taken the time to transcribe a couple of parts (violin and cello) of Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles.  I just have to find the time and motivation to get them fit for RS2014.

  15. A fellow from Brazil sent me 10 violin customs, including three from Lindsey Stirling (Shadows, Crystallize, and Round Table Rival) and asked me to review them for sharing.  They are good, but all of them contained impossible chart moves, like double stops that skip a string, or vibrato on an open string.  I offered to fix these little things for him and repackage but he said he'd rather fix it himself as he's still learning the charting process.

  16. I don't think Rocksmith is a viable medium for learning a wind instrument or piano, because it doesn't show you what note to play, but instead shows you where you to put your fingers on a string relative to the nut.  I do believe that ANY stringed instrument consisting of 4 or 6 strings could be learned with sufficient effort and interest on the part of the person creating the chart.  Anything beyond that would require modifying the game itself to allow for variations on the string counts, like 5 or even 7 strings.

If we want to see the boundaries expand, it'll require effort on the part of people who not only know the technical side of EOF and RS2014, but also have an inherent knowledge of sheet music and transposition.
