  1. Glad I noticed this thread. Bump and thanks!
  2. ^^ Thanks. I use a Y cable but never tried turning the guitar to zero on RS. I'll try that tonight.

    Amps!

When I play RS2014 via the laptop I use (1) headphones when learning a song in slow down mode or (2) "Y splitter" into used POD HD500 that feeds a Line6 15w amp when I play a song at full speed. Not a great amp but that POD HD500 is loads of fun to toy with
  4. Thanks ^ I'll do some google research on your ideas. Like I said I'm low tech when it comes to this stuff but I like your thoughts. Playing backing tracks that have no guitar reveals to me where I really need improvement. So I learn the song on RS and then migrate to a backing track when I know the song well. It is easier for me to navigate & launch free backing tracks using my laptop than using the iphone from this backing track site... http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/ I think I will soon purchase a few backing tracks from that site for my favorites, so any feedback on that link is appreciated. I use headphones to play RS2014 on the laptop because my laptop speakers sound terrible. I thought I may try RS2014 thru my amp just for fun and to rattle the walls a bit.
  5. This is a question from a low tech guy. I have a 15w Line 6 amp with an input jack for an iphone designed to play backing tracks thru the amp allowing me to play along. Question – would it be okay to run the cable from the headphone jack on my laptop into the amp to play backing tracks and also play Rocksmith thru the amp? Don’t want to fry the laptop but I’d like to be able to play backing tracks and RS2014 from the laptop to the amp if it won’t fry either one.
  6. Bought some songs @ 40% off this past weekend. Wanted to come back by and say thank you! FWIW... I tried to purchase individual songs via the game but they were only listed in song packs. When I went to the steam store they were available for single song purchase.
  7. Everyone is different but for me the turning point was learning my first song and getting a gold pick on hard score attack. For the first few months I tried to play X-Kid by Green Day which was just way out of my league. It was frustrating and I was not getting better. Then I read a thread on easy songs and bought 7-nation army and learned the rhythm (not lead) path. When I finally got a gold pick the feeling was incredible and I was motivated. Then I learned to play Next Girl, then Angela, then Blitzkreig Bop and all of a sudden I was super motivated to play more and more. I still play these songs because it is fun and it can’t hurt to exercise the fingers although now I play games with the songs such as playing 7-nation army using 3 finger power chords to make it a bit harder and develop skill and yet still score well on RS 2014. Here are some songs I felt were easy in my early days. I just scored a gold pick this weekend on the rhythm path for Enter Sandman which was huge for me personally it is at a level 12 months ago I did not think I could ever reach. Anyway hope this helps in some way. A few songs that I found easy as a beginner. My advice is to pick songs you like. I don’t learn songs that I don’t like to listen to. White Stripes - 7 Nation Army - Rhythm Black – Pearl Jam – Rhythm Black Keys - Next Girl - Lead David Bowie - Rebel Rebel - Rhythm Green Day - Brain Stew (final riff is a bit harder but you will still sound good even if you skip playing the B & E strings although you probably won't get a gold pick). Rage Against the Machine - Renegades of Funk - Rhythm Rage Against the Machine - Bulls on Parade - Rhythm Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop - Rhythm (edit LEAD not rhythm. Lead is 2 finger easy power shords. Rhythm is Barre chords) The Dead Weather - I Can’t Hear You - Lead Rock of Ages – Def Leppard - Rhythm Edit to add to the original list: Cold War Kids - Hang me up to Dry (This song is a major earworm for me). Fairly easy but if you are a new player you may struggle on the fast alternate picking section as a beginner. Good technique practice! I always try to watch songs on Youtube before I purchase to get a feel as to whether or not I am able to play them if they are official game songs for sale.
  8. I started out on the bottom of the line Epiphone Les Paul that I got for $169 bundled with the game and cable, so it is a really cheap guitar. When I upgraded to a used Gibson SG with cosmetic damage (scratches & stuff) my play improved a ton. It is soooo much easier to play a good quality guitar that your play should improve a lot. I got the used Gibson SG for $399 at a local guitar store. If your budget is not that big still keep a lookout for a good used guitar. The local shop here sells most of their used stuff for about 60% of retail and it if has cosmetic damage even cheaper than that. Look around you may find a used good guitar at a great price. To me a better guitar is worth it. Epiphone makes some good guitars when you move up in their model line so don't be afraid of a good used Epi. I play at least an hour a day so for me the price of a good guitar was worth the investment. Where else can you get an hour of great fun and entertainment for a little over $1 a day over the course of a year?
  9. The rhythm path for Use Somebody by Kings of Leon has a lot of barre chords if you want practice. Mostly the same shape on frets 1, 5 and 8 so not too hard. Audioslave's Like a Stone has a section of barre chords using different frets and shapes. There are many others including the songs by Green Day suggestions above. google youtube for videos of these options
  10. I use a splitter and run it to a Line 6 POD HD500 and then to an amp. It is fun to try and match the Rocksmith tone on the HD 500. The amp does highlight the shortcomings of my play but a dose of reality is motivation to practice more.
  11. I've been playing 13 months with RS and yes it can teach you how to play. But they key is you have to play the guitar. I play an hour a day and more on the weekend because it is fun. It does not feel like practice although it is practice. Supplementing RS with a teacher is also helpful. I have used online teachers but I think a 1 on 1 with a human is what I need to get to the next level. True story I played - or tried to play and actually butchered - Knockin' on Heaven's Door last year after 1 month of play time. My nephew was polite but I'm sure I ruined his ears that day. This year I nailed the lead for Satisfaction (100%!) , Gasoline and Show me How to Live using a splitter to play through RS and thru an amp. By the look on my nephews face he was impressed. I sounded fairly good although I still consider myself a beginner. So you you can learn to play with RS and online you tube helps too. But you have to invest the time, no way around that. Writing music after 2 years? I can't answer that one but I suppose if you have the gift maybe.
  12. most of the Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine songs may have what you want. Also take a look at Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand. It is good alternate picking practice too. I think all of the lead parts are on youtube so you can take a peek and see if they are what you are looking for.
  13. Noob here. A big thank you to all the people that put in the work! Much appreciated.
