  1. @@cstewart, you make a great point, the ultimate-guitar solution would be far from ideal, but it might be partially solved if we go back to the "approved" vs. just a community ratings system. In that case, people searching for the "best" version of a song can filter versions / variations of a song by those "blessed" by a community song approver. (more on this later) Similar to @@RobotMonster's first points, let's say we have a user like @altamont who have uploaded a lot of Bass tracks, and I wanted to add a Rhythm guitar part to some, I shouldn't have to ask him permission for each track and wait for response if, in this example, he may not care if someone added the guitar parts, or fixed a tone. Having the checkbox per song or account that says "go nuts" would save a lot of time for both parties, and help promote community involvement in the process. And we'd leave the default value to be off, so that people don't accidentally open-source their work. @@RobotMonster, that's a great example for exclusive ownership. My only counter to that, and it would not win an argument, would be that writing a piece of music may not mean you'd be the best user of the EOF tool etc. I do think that putting up your songs here, especially if we created a separate forum in the workshop for user-created songs, would be awesome, and a great self-promotional tool. Plus, wouldn't it be great to be able to ask the actual author - hey, is this a bend or a slide, or what delay pedal did you use, etc. Here's the situation, as I understand it: This community is completely dependent on having authors of CDLCs that keep updating and uploading their work, so in the end, we have to keep them happy. The community is also a relatively new one at that and, as we saw with Smithy's, is definitely fallible, therefore striking a balance between those that publish their work vs. those that consume / rate them is a tough task. The problem: 1) the work that authors do varies in quality / accuracy. No transcription is perfect, and neither should it be held to that standard. 2) whereas author's efforts in transcription is worthy of recognition, unless they wrote the songs, they cannot have a monopoly on the actual songs themselves. Right now, if I wanted to do another version of Back in Black with an improved solo, and the original author is unresponsive or didn't agree with my suggestion, I'd have to do Back in Black v2, and then we'd have the same problem as ultimate-guitar. Chances are that I'd have used most of the same notes and tones as the original author anyway to save effort, then there might be an argument of me passing off his or her work as my own, but my counter argument would be that I was emulating the song, which they don't own, not their work. A possible solution: A great goal for a community like this would be to make the barrier of entry to contribution so low that everyone would be able to add work without fear. If their work was good, it would be incorporated to the "approver-blessed" version. This is why I like the open-source model so much. Authors could start a piece and upload it, others could clone it and submit pull requests which could be approved by either the original author, a moderator, or the community at large. Otherwise, someone can fork a project, and turn the tones all into Reggae for a lark. Having this ability to Remix music would make it a very enlightening community. This solution would require a lot of re-work for the forum, but just having an "open-source" checkbox per song or author would make for a great step towards it. We could test this out in a sub-forum, and work out the kinks before rolling them out to the rest at large.

  3. This comes from the discussion over at http://customsforge.com/topic/1470-the-need-to-separate-good-cdlc-from-unfinishedbad-one/ Basically this is a list of guys willing to commit some of our time to testing CDLC and commenting our findings be it at the workshop pertinent to that CDLC, via PM and/or the google docs below, if you need anything tested let us know by posting here or via PM to any of us at the list below, PERSONALLY i preffer PMs that way i get a notification so yeah, also let us know if you would like to test CDLC, this is an open group and we are happy to get more guys to join just try to keep it relaxed and follow our example, cheers :). COMPLETE LIST OF TESTED CDLC: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqgJhtukD_LedE85eVg4V3E2TjlZZ0t0RFJnNlZSU1E&usp=sharing%C2%A0 GUIDELINES FOR TESTERS(this are suggestions but we would really appreciate any tester keeping close to them): -If you plan to test CDLC on a constant or semi-constant basis please let Olorin or myself know(its much more convenient for us if you do it via PM, BTW) that way we will add you to the list. -Its not a job, you can do it on your own speed but we do ask you to report your feedback in at least two places, 1) the CDLC/workshop post of that particular song and also the GOOGLE DOC(link up there). -If you report feedback at the CDLC post please go as much in detail as you feel to but when posting feedback in the google doc please try to keep it short and simple, read the first feedbacks to see how we did it and take from that example. -Also please be sure to post links to the particular file you are reviewing for clarity sake. A little explanation on the google docs entries logic: As you can see we have the basic information colums: Artist, Song, Testers, Link, Status and Feedback. ***Artist/Song: self explanatory, name of the artist and the particular song you tested. ***Testers: basically, US, you, whoever has valid feedback for the CDLC. ***Link: link to the CDLCDB/WORKSHOP/FILE you tested, try to keep them valid in case the autor of the CDLC changes something. ***Status: The current status of the TESTING DONE on the CLDC, NOT the status of the charter project/CDLC, i.e. if it needs more TESTING, if it has been fully tested or not, personally i manage 2 status, FULLY TESTED(which i color GREEN) and AWAITING TESTERS (means me or someone tested the CDLC but would also like for more people to give us feedback on that particular CDLC, specially if i/we didnt tested ALL the features in the song, for example i only tested the bass but no lead) ***Feedback: BASIC feedback, specially short comments that summarize your findings, feel free to go into more detail when posting in the particular CDLC entry at the database or workshop post. For example: "Lead: good but tone is too muddy/overdriven, rhythm: good but a bit imprecise at the end, bass: great" As you can see you give info on what and where needs work but you can go into waaay more detail at the post of that CDLC on the DB. ALSO, i just added the "CHARTER" column, that way we can give credit to whoever charted the CDLC ;). THANK YOU :). TESTERS: CrazyEddie (on weekends) *************** JayEm ********* Olorin ******** urworstknight ****************** xDatBoiSOBLE ******************* Joe ***** piepesado ************** Firekorn *********** EDIT (26,04,2014): Just a small notice, i havent run away haha, ive just been busy with work and will continue to be until the end of this month (april, 2014), i really want this small project to get serious enough to help the community while being relaxed and not stressfull specially for the rest of our team ;).

This community and its people are fantastic. Here's to hoping we'll one day get to make a 3, 4, and 5k milestone thread in the future!

  10. Thought I'd share my problem (and fix) from when I first got Rocksmith. No idea whether anyone has the same problem; someone might! :) I had the issue above - basically a constant humming or background noise through the speakers - when Rocksmith being played on my Laptop. Not sure if it's as much of a problem on Desktops. The fix is a 'ground loop isolator' that sits between the laptop headphone socket and your amp.. You should be able to get one for less than £10 on Ebay. To see if you need one, start RS as normal and see if you have this humming noise (unclean sound), then unplug the power cable to your laptop (so it runs off the battery). If your sound magically improves (no hum) then guess what; you need one.. Worked great for me. Sound is as clean as a whistle through the speakers - and not just for Rocksmith.. :)

  17. besides that its easier to add the missing measures at the beginning of the song in the gp file itself. right mouse click -> add measures-> add before current position in guitar pro its even easier, right mouse and add measure.

  18. I have active pickups. The game does not register anything lower than C using a real bass (although I've gone down to A on guitar). If you chart a song lower than C using a real bass guitar you won't make it past the tuner, unless you temporarily switch to emulated bass it. When the song starts up the game will count all notes lower than C as a MISS, unless you wanna cheat and check the ignore checkbox in EOF. If a note is set to ignore, it won't count as a miss or take away from your percentage.

  19. What happens when a CDLC has problems and the charter hasn't made any updates for months? What is the polite way to submit a fix? I'd like to see CDLCs viewed more like open-source projects that anybody can improve upon, rather than "exclusively owned" by the original charter. I admit I've not made any CDLCs yet so my opinion shouldn't count as much as a charter's. OTOH if there was a nice way to submit fixes to neglected CDLCs, I might actually spend the time to do it for a couple that have been bothering me, and everybody wins. Perhaps related -- if I do submit any CDLC it will likely be for songs I've composed myself (though I'm not sure if there's any interest in this sort of thing), so I can see the value in the "uploader wants exclusive ownership" model vs the "open-source-anybody-can-improve" model.

  21. I like the spirit of the idea, but I'm not sure it needs to be so formalized. I'd be happy with a sub-forum in the Workshop for collaborations. If we're just taking people's customs, changing them and re-uploading them, I can see it quickly spiralling out of control, like the tabs on ultimate-guitar. 10 different tabs for each song, but which one is correct?
    1 point
  22. I agree that the charter does a lot of work, and absolutely credit should be given when you're uploading somebody else's work -- taking credit for somebody else's work is just plain rude. However, a charter should not be able to claim "ownership" over a CDLC as it was never their IP to begin with. The "rocksmith content" of a CDLC not made by the actual rights-holder of a song should be considered "public domain." It doesn't make sense to claim any sort of right over a CDLC unless you own the copyright on the actual song! This is a tricky issue, and I certainly want to see charters get the credit for all their hard work and gifts to the community. I don't know who was banned or what the relevant songs were, I'm just concerned with this curious double-standard -- it's like trying to sue somebody for copyright infringement because they made a copy of your bootleg concert recording.
    1 point
  23. I don't want to start a flame war, but this does seem a bit precious to me. It's not like the charters wrote the songs or played in the recordings, and often they've used tabs created by others. Yes charters put a lot of work into making CDLCs, but I don't think there should be a problem with making available a CDLC made by someone who isn't on this website, unless you're also going to prevent CDLC that wasn't uploaded by the rights-holders of the actual song! The 'original charter' should be given credit out of politeness, but the idea that a CDLC is "owned" by the creator seems at odds with the fact that the "creator" doesn't own most of the content of the CDLC, and it's all provided as a gift to the community for educational purposes. The administrators of the website can obviously dictate whatever rules they wish, as its their website, but this does seem oddly inconsistent to me.

  24. The chart authors' wishes are being honored. If you have a problem with it, take it up with them instead.

  25. No, I think this will only cool people's enthusiasm for creating customs. The ratings system (and the whining about it) is part of what brought Smithys down, after all. I'm not able to make my own customs -- time, ability, talent -- so I'm pretty grateful that other people can, and are taking the time to do this for the rest of us. I agree that a lot of the customs I've tested aren't all that great. In fact a lot of them are just unplayable -- partly because I'm so used to the official songs, which of course are professionally charted. So the difference is too jarring. But you know what? I didn't pay for any of the CDLCs and therefore can't complain about them. I've argued for the need to consider CDLCs as part of a vast Open Source project -- once a CDLC has been posted, there should be a process allowing interested people to continue to refine them. It's like a lot of fields -- take books, for example. The writer creates the initial manuscript, but there are a lot of people involved in cleaning it up and getting it ready for publication before it finally becomes a book.
